All in one hotel for golfers, couples with name tags on company trips, and busy pool scene. Beach is very long and becomes private at the edges of the resort. Don't valet your car, it's a pain waiting for it and tipping all the time. The garage is $10 per day and fine. The River Course is tricky. The Ocean Course is boring compared to famous ocean side courses. It's a 50 minute drive from the airport and an hour from San Juan, not a pretty drive. Food was pretty good, nothing great. Staff was very friendly and they attend to your room three times a day. Very clean hotel. A mountain view room overlooking the roof at $345 was a disappointing view. Oceanfront is nice but pricey as well. Breakfast and lunch without alcohol is $20 apiece and twice that for dinner. Casino is small but functional. We became bored with the complex after a few days and there is nothing to do that isn't at least 1/2 hour away. If we ever go back to PR, we'll try the Carribean side (Horned Dorsett in Rincon sounds great). Overall, the Westin is an above average hotel, great for a corporate outing, but not a preferred getaway for these snowbirds.

We (2 couples) were excited to stay here expecting a quiet beach resort vacation until we arrived and found the lobby full of conventioneers and the beach and pool relatively uninviting. There was little that was warm or welcoming about the hotel. Our rooms overlooked a cement wall. While the staff at the front desk seemed to try to be helpful in changing our rooms, they would disappear for 15-20 minutes at a time behind the closed door before they would return with an answer, which was to come back later. We wasted entirely too much time trying to get our rooms changed. We finally (after 2 nights) checked out and went to the Ponce Hilton which was wonderful. The beds were the best thing about the Westin.

We stayed here (2/9-2/12, 2005) only because we were attending a conference. The hotel, grounds, pool, beach, etc. is beautiful, but not worth the price. We paid $250 a night which was the conference rate but that was before all the fees. A 22% resort fee, a $15 bellman fee, a $2 per day housekeeping fee, a $10 self parking fee. For 3 nights we spent over $1,000.

We arrived at 11:00pm and after confirming our reservation earlier in the day, we didn't have a room assigned. It took 10 minutes all while we received much appology. We had requested a king bed but none was available. They said they were going to upgrade us to ocean view but it never happened. They were great at appologizing and promising, but not coming through. Several others in our conference had problems as well. The Westin needs to work on this place.

We just returned from a five day stay at the Westin Rio Mar, Jan. 31st
thru Feb. 5th.
Having read past reviews we were a little bit wary, but I must say on the
whole we were pleasantly surprised.
We rented a car at the airport and drove to the hotel. It is about a 45
minute drive through alot of traffic but coming from New York we are
used to it.
Check-in was fine and were upgraded to an ocean view room, though, the view was partially obstructed by palm trees. The room was large enough, and the bathroom was fine.
The pool area was quite large and there were plenty
of chairs. The beach area is vast. We walked a few hundred feet down the beach every day and we had that part of the beach to ourselves.
The fitness room is small but well equipped, and most of the other
facilites are fine,
The restaurants are very pricey. We only ate a few meals at the hotel.
If You have a car there are a number of restaurants in the area you can drive to. We found the staff at the concierge desk to be very helpful with
dining recommendations.
Just down the road from the hotel we ate a charming little restaurant
named Antojitos Puertorriquenos. We had a red snapper dinner there
for $10, and it was quite good.
We would definitely return to the Rio Mar but would recommend, that you rent a car so you could sample the restaurants in the area, and take
advantage of the hotel's proximity to the Rain Forest.

Just got back from a 4 night stay at the Westin Rio Mar. I'll start with the best part of the hotel - Cactus Jack's Restaurant. The staff was VERY friendly and accomadating and the food was EXCELLENT (escpeciially the ribs and quesadillas). The service at the Tiki Bar was fast and friendly - the food was ok.
The hotel was very crowded with conventions and conferences. I think that for a company meeting or for a family trip this is an ok hotel. There were lots of kids and plenty of activities. I would not recommend this hotel for couples.
Now for the BAD - My boyfriend and I booked our room through American Express and our package included an upgraded room (based on availiability), free buffett breakfast for 2 each day and a $100 credit at the Spa. When we arrived the woman at the front desk told us our room had alreday been upgraded and we were pleased - however, when we got to our room we clearly had NOT been upgraded. We called down to the front desk and were told that a junior suite was not available for the first night, but we could switch to one to following day for the remainder of our stay. We were disappointed, but understanding since the hotel seemed to have a few different conventions/conferences going on. The next morning we checked in with the front desk and were told (quite nastily) that our new room was not available yet and to come back later. When we went back to the front desk again at 3pm we were then todl by another person that there were NO junior suites available. We were obviously upset and confused since we had been told by 2 different people that a junior suite was available. It wasn't the fact that an upgrade was not available that upset us, it was the manner in which we were treated and questioned in a way as if we made the whole thing up!!!!
Also, when we received our bill on teh last day - we found that we were charged for breakfast every day and charged the $40 my boyfriend spent at the spa for a haircut - So, check your bill VERY carefully when checking out.
