Reviewed March 9, 2013

great location. away from the noise of San Juan. restaurants are expensive. service is inconsistent. A special kudos and thanks to Juan P Diaz at Marbella. He goes well beyond other employees at Rio Mar. Dramatic drop off when he is not working. He understands that he works in a service industry and it shows. I wish others would follow his example

Room Tip: Avoid resort view rooms. Smokers on terrace outside lobby bar are extremely LOUD

I stayed 3 nights at the Rio Mar Beach Resort in mid-December. The resort was nearly empty which was great. The pools are nice and the beach was also good for swimming or walking. We found a great rate through Hotwire. There is a small casino in the lobby and a number of pretty good restaurants. The casino didn't seem to get hopping until late at night which meant little table game action until then. The resort was easy to get to from the airport.

The stay would have been perfect if not for terrible climate control options in the room. The humidity in the room was out of control and the air conditioning did nothing to alleviate it. Covers of my books were curling, the sheets and my clothes all felt damp all the time and the cover to my Ipad started to bubble all because of the excessive humidity. We complained to the front desk about this issue to no avail. I was very frustrated at the desk staff's lack of response to this issue. The only way to make the room even slightly less humid was to absolutely blast the a/c (set it in the 50s), making it uncomfortably cold. My best guess as to the root of the problem is that the sliding door does a bad job sealing out the humidity from the outside because we never kept our patio door open more than to just go in or out onto the balcony. I know we were in the tropics, but when I can't lay in bed without it feeling wet, that's just gross. I also don't want to come to a tropical environment and wish I had my winter clothes from the midwest with me because the air conditioning is so high. The hotel lobby was also like an icebox. We were guessing that they had to keep it that cold because of similar humidity issues or because they had a life size gingerbread house in the lobby for the holidays which probably would have melted if it were warm at all. While I liked a lot of things about the resort, the climate control issues really would make me hesitate to go back or recommend this to anyone else.

Room Tip: Test the A/C units and make sure humidity can be controlled!

Good balance of price, facilities, service and beach. Closer to El Yunque rainforest and horseback riding, good places eat to both on and off property. The front desk agent upgraded us to an Ocean Suite, not only a nice thing to do, but the room was a great place to relax. Thanks and definitely we will be back.

Room Tip: Be nice and they can WOW you, garden view is nice, but Ocean View is just amazing.

Dear Valued Guest,

We are glad you njoyed your stay and were able to relax. Here is a tip for your next trip: There are many fun things to do at Rio Mar, but if you decide to explore the Island of Enchantment, we have many nearby attractions you can enjoy. Just minutes away from Rio Mar, you can go visit El Yunque Rainforest, one of the very few rainforests left in the world, and the only one under the US flag, providing a magical quality to our lush tropical surroundings. Also, minutes away, we have the Carabalí Rainforest Park, where you can do zip lining, horseback riding, ride ATVs through the rainforest, mountain bike or ride in go-karts. In the nearby town of Fajardo, you can do the Bio-Bay Kayak Tour, this fully guided night trip into one of the most amazing natural phenomena of the world! Paddle your way through the mystical mangrove channels leading to “Laguna Grande.” There, you will meet our glowing friends, the Pyrodinium Bahamense, microscopic plankton capable of producing natural light at the touch of your hand! If you want to enjoy these or any other tour, you can just visit our Tour Desk, located at the Lobby area.

Thank you for your review.

We look forwardto your next visit,

The entire conference included several hundred people so I'm not alone on this. WE WERE ALL SICK!! The food is insanely expensive and not good. I was excited to come but after being here for two days we were ready to go home. I can't wait to board the plane tomorrow! Stay in San Juan or Isle Verde. Also, schedule your excursions ahead of time and not with the hotel, too expensive. Call the company directly. My advice go somewhere totally different!

First the good: the grounds are beautiful and most of the staff is gracious and helpful, but we got tired of the front desk and concierge asking us to go to the "open house" upstairs -i.e. time share. They will offer you a ton of freebies to go- don't. The room (suite) was large, clean with great ocean and pool views. The food here is good and between all the restaurants, there's a wide variety of choices. Book most of your trips yourselves. We booked Vieques through the hotel and that was worth it. But we saved literally hundreds of $$ by self booking other things, particularly fishing. East Island Excursions (eastwindcats.com) are a good choice for snorkeling and other trips - super nice staff too.

The bad/iffy: ridiculously expensive. If they would make adjustments to their pricing, they would be able to keep people on site more easily. We got a fridge and went to Amigo and bought beer, wine, water (a small bottle of water in the convenience store is around $3) and some snacks. But having a suite with no fridge was crazy ($10/day) Drinks on site are $10.50....ouch! Go for happy hour if you aren't picky about what you drink. On top of this, service around the pool was nearly non existent. We tried tipping (heavily) and that didn't help either.

Surprisingly, for a resort fairly remote from surrounding attractions/restaurants, there was no real nightly entertainment. We did attend a Friday night dance show at Marbella, which was very good. There were daily pool activities, however. The ocean on this side of the island is pretty choppy and very breezy here every day.

The hotel IS older, you will read complaints about this. Here is what I noticed in our room: the bathtub had been recoated, this was wearing/chipping away. The sink had a crack in it across the bottom of the bowl (it did not leak), the grouting was old and marked in some areas. The spout in the bathtub had been re-calked so many times it was kind of lumpy around it. But- none of this bothered me, everything worked and was basically clean. What did bother me: the ice maker on our floor was broken for over 2/3 of our trip-why? One of the 3 elevators was non-functional for about 1/3 of our trip. They DO NOT wash the glasses or ice bucket in your room - do it yourself??? Out of crab cakes multiple days in a row. Things like this just shouldn't happen at a resort advertising themselves as a higher end property. Room service staff super nice.

What I was bothered by were simple things like scuffs on the walls, drips on the bottom of the doors where something was spilled and never wiped off. That is pretty unacceptable. Also - if you need to call the front desk, service desk or room service, don't be surprised if no one answers even after 20+ rings. Hang up and try later. Again, unacceptable. The staff at the spa when dropping in were less than warm in their greeting. Call on the phone and make an appointment, show up and see a more inviting reaction. I had a wonderful manicure/fill...at a cost: $75. Way more than even downtown Minneapolis.

You are pretty removed here - so rent a car or get a taxi and go see old San Juan, eat at the kiosks on the way to Farjado (fun, cheap and huge variety). Go to Vieques for the bio-bay, fish and have a blast. Transportation is ridiculously expensive, we didn't want to rent a car so we spent a large amount of cash on taxis. One of the drivers let it slip that he was actually a hotel employee - so they get you again.

The men at the valet/bell hop station are crazy nice and really knowledgeable. NO internet in the rooms without paying $14.99 a DAY. Again a huge rip off from an already expensive resort. This is a large property, so look around and see the care that goes into the grounds - very well cared for to boot.

This sounds like I hated it there - I didn't. I actually enjoyed my kicked-back time. But, this 500 room hotel is just too big and expensive for my taste. Drink in the ocean and greenery while you are here, it is beautiful and plentiful. Not a good choice for people physically challenged - spread out. Puerto Rico has a lot of history and things to do, choose your location wisely - pay attention to the distances of places you want to see.

Room Tip: pay extra for an ocean view, suits are nice with plenty of room. Ocean side will be noiser if you h...
