Wyndham Grand Rio Mar Puerto Rico Golf & Beach Resort
Ranked #2 of 4 Hotels in Rio Grande
Reviewed April 24, 2011

We will be back to this resort! The beach and the resort are beautiful, and the service was great.

Tip #1: Rent a car. It will save you a lot of money.

Tip #2: Eat out. There is a delicious and very reasonably priced Tappas place called Tappas 13 very close by (take a left at the light) and we ate there for four days straight! Also, Antojitas, which is just at the end of the road, has great breakfast and delicious coffee. It opens at 8 am.

Tip #3: If you want to sit on the beach, you better get there by 10 am! Chairs are taken!

Tip #4: If you are going to play golf, and you want to save $$, play after 2 pm. You will definitely get all 18 holes in, and it is half the cost. Also, PLAY golf if you are a golfer! What a great course!

Tip#5: If you are not into shopping (because we are not) do not go to Old San Juan. It is just like going to the mall, only hotter. We were there for 15 minutes. It is also a 40 minute drive, each way.

Tip #6: Definitely go to the rainforest and take a hike to the waterfall! It is 10 minutes from the resort and so much fun!

Enjoy it! We did and we will return for sure!

Enjoyed the hotel. everything was well done and beach was beautiful. rented a car (a must). saw bio bay, rainforest, and ate ate local restaurants and Kioskos. Hotel food was not great and very over priced. Staff was very helpful and friendly. The 2 pools were beautiful. walked at 7-8 am everyday and reserved beach and pool chairs early (because pool and beach get very crowded). Bio bay was a great trip. rainforest was not great, but fun to swim in waterfall. Not a carriben calm beach, but pretty to sit at...not like typical Carribean beaches). The hotel had few activities for kids and teens and nothing at night (except pool swimming ). Very relaxing vacation. Highly recommend having a car to explore the area. Also, buy some water bottles and snacks at the local supermarket because hotel is overpriced.

We just got back today from a week at the Rio Mar. We rented a car after reading many TripAdvisor reviews...and it was well worth it. We ate ONE meal at the hotel, the first night we arrived when we were too tired to go anywhere else. Over $100 at the pool-side bar for mediocre food & drinks. Other than that we ate at Antojitos at the bottom of the road leading to the Rio Mar, right off Rt. 3 many times for breakfast ($3.50 for great pancakes and bacon, French Toast etc), the bakery Isomar or the one on the way to El Yunque across Rt. 3, Lolitas Mexican on Rt. 3, the Luquillo Kiosks (my husband is in love with El Jefe Burger Shack), and Boardriders Rum Shack in Luquillo which was my favorite. Everything is easy to get to from the Rio Mar. We did day trips to Old San Juan, El Yunque, signed up on our own for a catamaran snorkel trip to Culebra, etc. DO NOT do the trips through the hotel unless you have no other option...for instance, going to El Yunque is FREE, yes, FREE. Why pay for a tour???
We also made trips to Walgreens, Ralph's supermarket etc for our own provisions and just used a cooler we bought at Walgreens and ice from the hotel...brought it to the pool and only had one instance when hotel staff told us it wasn't allowed. Hotel staff overall was incredibly friendly & helpful. Rooms were fine...big enough and clean enough. Yes, there's a humid/mildewy smell when you first enter the room but it goes away quickly...and you are, afterall, in the tropics.
We traveled with our 2 kids, ages 5 and 7, and even though they wanted to do the Kids club we didn't do it b/c it was way too expensive and we were having fun w/ them. Waves at the beach were huge and my oldest did get thrown around...which is why a trip to beautiful Flamenco Beach on Culebra was well worth it.
One other word of advice...if you do get out for dinner, do not go to Richies at the top of the mountain (right turn out of Rio Mar)...way over-priced and food isn't very good. Go for the view if anything at all.
Overall we had a great week...sorry to be back in rainy/cold New England. I'm not sure we'd go here again just b/c the resort is so expensive...but we did have a good time. Pool was awesome...kids have grown gills.
Oh...two other unfortunate negatives were the parking fees and charges for wi-fi in the room. But, you can easily go into the lobby of the hotel and use wi-fi for free. Not sure what another reviewer was talking about either about the English shows on tv...my kids watched tv every afternoon before dinner and we didn't have any problems finding their favorite shows from home...and no charges at all.
Ocean view room was just that, an ocean view from the terrace. No complains there.

Just returned from a week at the Rio Mar in Puerto Rico. The trip didn't begin on a great note. We arrived around 11:30 at night and our bags didn't arrive at our room until nearly an hour later. Our ocean front room gave us a great view of a huge palm tree which blocked out the view of the beach and pool area. I guess ocean front doesn't necessarily mean ocean view. The room also felt very damp and a small pool of water would form on the floor each night which I have never experienced in a hotel before. Someone came and adjusted the thermostat plus provided us a de-humidifier for the room which helped. The beach is long with beautiful sand but unfortunately alot of garbage like cigarette butts, plastic cups, cellophane, paper, etc litter the beach. I have seen much more pristine beaches in the Caribbean. The food on site was expensive (dinner for 4 adults and one child ran about $250) and nothing to write home for. However the weather was perfect and the trip to the rain forest (10 minute drive from hotel) was great. Also, we rented a car to go to Old San Juan and the rain forest to save money. It was fairly easy to get around by car.

Overall, the resort was nothing to rave about. It wasn't a disaster but it didn't live up to our expectations. We won't return - there are too many other beautiful resorts in the Caribbean to visit.

I have travelled the world, alone and with family and friends and have never been in a worse hotel. It was supposedly a beach hotel, but the beach was a public one and unswimmable at. Filthy water full of seaweed and debris, undertow, crashing waves, totally unsafe. We didn't have a car so either had to take a $59 pp catamaran snorkel cruise, which we did, or swim in pool. I was allowed in adult pool, my 13 year old grandson wasn't and had to stay in the kiddie pool. Food prices astronomical. By pool bar one hamburger was $16 and took an hour to produce. Supposed buffet restaurant, Marbella, was closed "for renovations" for 3 nights. Average dinner, sharing entree with grandson and having one glass of wine, was $65. No minibar unless you paid $45 , no cold water to drink in room. Oceanfront room had ocean and beach completely obscured by palm tree. TV gave no free shows in English, just $5 for each American show you wanted. Signedd up early for catamaran trip and prepaid, had voucher but when we got there there was no record of our being expected. Had to beg and plead to get on boat.
Safe worked fitfully, same with phone in room. Without car, expensive taxis to town ($30 roundtrip) were only way to get to eat in typical Puerto Rican restaurant or buy groceries or beer ($5 for a small can in hotel). Rainforest trip OK, same for snorkeling trip but pricey. Walls thin, difficult to sleep with screaming kids on other side.
Nightlife nonexistent unless you like casinos.

Room Tip: Don't go.

Great Beach
Big pool, great for kids (that can swim, tougher for the littler folks, and sub par kiddie pool)
"Roomy" Rooms
VERY service oriented upper management
Very service oriented restaurant staff (we ate on premises for each of the 8 days we were there)
Some of the rank & file hotel staff need some service lessons, but senior management straightened out the issues right away
Casino is the size of my living room
Difficult and expensive to get off property unless you rent a car - on site car rental can get you a Yaris for $60 for the day - nothing really great to see close by - 45 minutes to an hour trip to Old San Juan
Felt a little nickel and dimed for stuff thats complimentary at other resorts:
Have to pay $75 per day per kid for kids club
Have to pay for use of Kayaks, boogie boards etc

Overall an enjoyable and relaxing stay, but there is definitely room to improve.

The room, the beach and the pool are all very nice. We had our own alcohol both at the pool and the beach. Nobody said a word about my cooler or what was in it. The $15 a day parking as well as getting your ticket validated is a joke (the bad). Having our beach umbrella pulled at 3:45 was ugly.
