My wife and I have been to the Royal Oak at Wineham several times over the years. Thoroughly recommended for food, drink and cosy/friendly atmosphere (especially in winter, with a blazing log fire). Very pretty part of the world. Food prices very reasonable for both quality and quantity. Service a little slow, but well worth the wait - and what's the hurry?

Drove through various country lanes to find this pub but it was well worth the journey. There aren't many tables inside but we managed to get the last one. The meals we chose were the vegetarian and meat options. They were tasty, good portions and well presented without being over priced. It was a lovely relaxing lunch time visit in a peaceful setting and we would definitely go back again.

Have been looking forward to going to this pub tucked away in Wineham. The interior of the pub is just fantastic, so old and Quirky, with so much to look at scattered around the pub, from old pictures to old objects no longer used in the modern world. With a choice of four ales in wooden barrels to choose from...heaven. The staff are very polite great to talk to. Food. The menu is small but something for every one. I was going to have the steak and ale pie but on asking if if was a proper pie (top and base) was told it only had the top. It's worth asking when you see pie on the menu when you eat out because sadly so many pubs serve, basically a sort of meat stew with a puff lid that is popped on the top. We chose the free range chicken breast with caesar salad. At nearly £11.00 it was sadly lacking in quantity. It was a few cos lettuce leaves four very small croutons, and just three very small pieces of crispy parma ham and garlic and herb dressing. Although very tasty, we all agreed that it was just like eating a starter. We had to order pudding for we were still hungry. Puddings were great, I had the cheese board (£7.25) yet again small for the price. So give it a visit but not if you are very hungry.

If you were going to design the perfect English country pub – you could use the Royal Oak as the blueprint. Located on a quite country B road - a traditional black and white timbered, 14th century building with low ceiling and flagstone floors. We found it quite by chance (returning from an uninspiring concert in nearby Hurstpierpoint) – it was quite busy for a Monday evening with diners and drinkers – always a good sign. Considering it had just gone 9 o’clock we were surprised and delighted to be told that the kitchen would be happy to take a supper order. - splendid ‘bangers and mash’ with a really decent house red plus a very good chicken Caesar salad. Excellent pub-grub, great atmosphere and good service from friendly/amusing staff. We will definitely be returning.
