“A great experience”
Reviewed January 6, 2013

I have recently moved to Ongar and so far have only been to The Fat Turk for lunc a couple of times. Both times the food has been delicious and the service efficient. I love the interior and am planning a couple of nights there with friends in the next few weeks when I look forward to sampling the cocktails!

“Expectation higher than the experience”
Reviewed December 5, 2012

We live close to Ongar and thought it time we paid a visit to The Fat Turk given that it has rave reviews on Tripadvisor and that Turkish food is one of my favourites. We called to check last orders for lunch on a Wednesday and were advised 3pm so we arrived at 2.30pm. We ordered drinks, the meze platter and a main course. Drinks arrived swiftly and the viognier was delicious. For the next ¾ of an hour we were entertained by the family and friends who dropped by for a chat with their takeaway coffees but no food appeared. We chased it up and were very soon presented with our main courses, still no meze starter platter. This was quickly rectified but we were mystified as to what had taken ¾ hour as all the items are cold except the flash fry calamari: ‘computer error’ we were advised, (but we were the only diners!). After a run to top up the car park the meze was presented, very appealing on a wooden platter. The food was good but predictable with nothing homemade for perhaps the delicious chunky tzatziki and the fried calamari. The main course grills state ‘rice and salad’ which was exactly what was served. The lamb sis and lamb kebab were good but it was disappointing indeed that a restaurant is serving a ‘quick cook’ rice in 2012, let alone one which was bland, poorly seasoned and not garnished in any way. It was certainly not ‘normal’ rice and a far cry from Turkish pilaf (cooked first in butter then by the absorption method in veg or chicken stock). The salad was a simple tomato salsa which was good and added colour and texture.
The front of the restaurant is arranged in Bedouin tent style which is quite interesting but because they have tried to fit as many tables as possible into a small space it is incredibly uncomfortable. The straight back seats are church pew depth so not an option for the long haul of a special evening out. I am average size and height but either had to sit on the edge of my seat to reach my food or sit back and stretch my arms out. The back room is just as it always was: a back room.
We would go to the Fat Turk again for a simple quick lunch but would need them to step up their game to be a serious addition to our restaurant list.

Hi, thank you kindly for taking the time to review The Fat Turk, Ongar. Please accept my sincerest apologies again for the confusion with your starter and main courses. As explained since our new re-fit, the day of your visit was the first time we had our new software and kitchen order system up and running. This is not an excuse however but merely an explanation. I would like to add that all our meze dishes are homemade with the exception of sujuk, hellim and taramasalata.

I must say that i am somewhat disappointed that you found our new layout to be uncomfortable. The genuine and bespoke cedar wood and solid oak slab table tops have gone down very well with all of our guests and i believe enhance the dining experience. The only downfall with fixed booth seating is that it will not be a perfect fit for everybody.

I am glad that you say you will be visiting us again for a quick lunch and look forward to hopefully seeing you soon. May I take this oppurtunity to wish you a very merry christmas and a healthy and prosperous new year.

Rgds
