“Experience of a lifetime”
Reviewed August 9, 2013

This was without a doubt the most wonderful cruise shore excursion I've ever taken, and honestly, it was the best experience with "wildlife" or animals I've ever had. My wife and I were celebrating our 20th anniversary, and this was the event we were looking forward to the most - we had high expectations, and this exceeded them by far. It was over a half hour to nearly 45 minutes of playing and petting the dolphin, but nothing compared to grabbing hold of her fins and having her give me a ride on her stomach through the pool. The instructors/guides were extremely interactive with both customers and the dolphins, and this is a memory we will cherish for the rest of our lives. We also got a great deal on the pictures afterward. I would highly recommend this as a required experience for anyone visiting Grand Cayman, and I can't wait to do it again.

“A memorable experiemce”
Reviewed August 3, 2013

We did this dolphin adventure as a part of an excursion from Carnival Paradise cruise. It was pricey, and the fact that you cannot take your own photos and buy the outrageously priced photos they take can make you cringe. However, it was worth every penny.

The adventure we did had us as part of group in the water with the dolphin and trainer. We had many chances to pet the dolphin as it swam past us. We were able to dance with the dolphin, kiss the dolphin, as well as have a kiss from the dolphin. We were able to be pushed by the nose of the dolphin while on a boogie board across the pool. The speed and strength was incredible. We were also able to swim by holding the fins of the dolphin and play ball with it.

I thought we were in the pool a good amount of time and had plenty of opportunities to be close. This was on my bucket list but my husband and two boys (ages 9 and 11) also participated and we had a blast. One of those things you will always remember. We were also able to have access to the turtle farm across the street for free with this adventure. That was interesting as well.

We were told that this were rescue dolphins and many had been with the Dolphin Cove for a few years at minimum.

Hello aoomy,

Thank you for your review. Dolphin Cove prides itself on being able to answer our guests questions, and perhaps you were speaking to one of our interns who did not have the answer to your question. Our interns are doing their very best to learn everything and be able to answer guests questions.

In regards to your question, when we have dolphins that are getting older, generally we do not "retire" them from our guest interactive programs until they "tell" us - how does a dolphin "tell" us you ask? Well trainers will be able to see it in their behaviour, attitude, their body condition and a few other things. When we are able to see that an older dolphin does not want to participate any longer, we of course will not force them, but instead do other things with that animal that it finds interesting, fun and reinforcing. This could be anything from toy sessions, to training sessions, where the animals mind can be kept stimulated by learning new behaviors as well as relationship sessions with their trainer. Dolphins find lots of things reinforcing and fun, and it's our jobs as trainers to always keep our animals interested.

However, as said before, we will not "retire" the animal until they "tell" us they are ready. Most animals enjoy interacting with the guests and like to do it for as long as possible.

I hope this answered your question, and possibly changed your mind about visiting Dolphin Cove, Grand Cayman again.

“Fulfilled my wife's life-long dream...”
Reviewed July 28, 2013

She has always wanted to swim with a dolphin and this was a great experience for the money. We have looked into this before and this excursion was 2/3 the cost of others. PLUS, we also got to swim with stingrays, as well. Well worth the heat (whew). Food is limited to pizza and sandwiches for purchase. Eat before you go. And take your own towel and a dry set of clothes.

“Pretty good”
Reviewed July 28, 2013

Our daughter was desperate to swim with the dolphins. We were fortunate enough to get a deal that included a free trip to Stingray City.

Her appointment was for 9:15am which turned out to be a good time, because it was before the big tour groups arrived. She did the "top" experience (forget what it was called) that included 2 rides - a tow and the foot push. There were only 6 in her group so there was enough time for everyone to interact with the dolphins and when 1 person only managed a few yards with the foot push before falling off, she was allowed to go again.

I thought that overall it was a good experience but would recommend getting there early on a non cruise ship day, as the group sizes for the later groups were much bigger. There is a maximum group size (can't remember what it was) but the experience must be different for a small group of 6 compared to one of 12 or 15. We also had a tour of the facility (10 mins) before, which I noticed the larger groups did not get. Even those of us who were not taking part in the Dolphin swim were allowed to join the tour, which wasn't all that long or extensive, but it rounded out the experience.

There was also a mini oceanography talk for those of us who were waiting, which was very interesting and allowed us to interact directly with marine life - sea snails, sea urchins, conch, starfish etc - if we wished.
