Rather than garden, I prefer to categorize KRC as forest. They indeed have gardens in some corners such as sakura garden, titan arum garden, lichen garden, fern garden, etc... but not that significant. What KRC offers the most is open grass field which is stunning due to its hilly contour, and old, big trees where people camp under. The temperature is around 18-24 degrees, even under direct sunlight you will still feel refreshing breeze. If you are lucky (or unlucky, depending how you feel about animals) you can meet wild gray monkeys. Be careful, sometimes they are too curious about what you eat or what to bring, and they will try to steal one.
KRC is perfect for group or family with children, they can play ball or ride horses. They also provide basic facility such as booth selling snacks or drinks, toilets, parking space, rubbish bin, etc. In peak season, there are women offering mat for rent if you forget to bring one. Sadly, some idiotic still threw away plastic/Styrofoam trash, cigarettes, candy or snack wrap wherever their stupid head want, which made this forest a bit dirty in some places. But overall, KRC is still a very beautiful place and worth a visit.
More than 20 years ago when the first time I visited KRC, it was much colder, quieter, and basically had almost nothing but forest. But now, I think they have been doing some development so they now they have access for cars to explore the forest. I think it's good, but in the other hand I hope they will keep the natural touch of this amazing forest.

Entry was cheap into the gardens although we didn't pay the extra to go into the palace due to time. The locals were certainly amused by us wearing shorts, being tourists we stuck out a mile and had numerous offers for photographs to be taken with them! Lots to see a worth a visit.

Perhaps we were just unlucky. Working as expats in Jakarta, we only had the weekend to visit. Arriving here on a Sunday, we foolishly expected a quite botanical garden to wander around. Instead of peace and quiet, what we walked into was not one but two rock concerts taking place within the garden at the same time. Thousands of people had arrived bringing huge amounts of plastic and styrofoam, which they did not hesitate to throw everywhere around the garden. By midday the garden resembled a garbage tip, with a rock and roll soundtrack thrown in.

Because two large stages had been set up in one garden, there was competition between the two bands to attract spectators. Their main tactic in trying to attract more music lovers, was to turn the amps up as loud as possible; the din from these twin concerts was absolutely deafening and this mountain garden was more like a garbage-strewn mosh pit.

It would certainly have been better to view at almost any other time, but the gardens didn't seem particularly well maintained or labelled anyway, and they served almost no discernible educational purpose. We were none the wiser about Indonesian fauna having gone there. Even worse, they were actually building access roads and some sort of conference centre within the botanical garden, giving up one whole corner of the garden to commercial development. This was one of the worst tourist experiences we have had in Indonesia.
