After a day on the road and tired of continuing on, we followed the signs to the 4-star Stella Marina Hotel for a one-night stop. It is located in an unattractive residential area on the edge of town, offering large apartment style rooms with equipped kitchenettes in two five year old buildings. Ample free parking is available on site as are recreational facilities we did not explore.
Check-in was handled efficiently by the English speaking receptionist, with a room facing the street assigned to us. We asked for a quiet room, and it indeed was since it appears the sidewalks in town get rolled up at nightfall. Moreover, the number of cars in the parking lot could be counted on one hand, suggesting barely enough guests to pay to keep the lights on.The room with French shutters on the doors, came with two comfortable single beds pushed together to make a king-size bed, plus a single bed, two couches that could serve as further beds, dining table with four chairs, safe, TV with international channels, wall mounted A/C with remote control, and a fridge(not stocked), all well lit and clean. On a positive note, this is the first hotel with a stone tile floor we have encountered to have put felt gliders on chair legs to eliminate typical noise from moving chairs, keeping those in a room below awake. The design of the bathroom is a joke, a 5x5 foot cubicle in which one can barely turn around held a stall shower, W.C. and the obligatory bidet. Black mold on the grout of the shower pan points to substandard housekeeping. A separate sink stand with a mirror offered little space to place things, and towels were rather hard and scratchy, not in keeping with four star hotel standards.
We visited the deserted restaurant intending to have dinner, but found it to have no menu to review beforehand, rather the lonely staffer told us he would cook anything we may want. Instead we chose to drive into the town center for a pleasant meal. Breakfast served from 7AM was minimalistic at best.
All in all, while we had a decent night of sleep, it is hard to imagine anyone would seek to stay at this hotel in its location for any length of time. Given the price we paid in mid-May, it can also hardly be considered a good deal by bargain seekers, except perhaps a family with lots of children. Should we be in the area again, we definitely would stay on the road and pass this hotel up.
