Hermitage Inn
Ranked #9 of 11 Warkworth B&B and Inns
Reviewed April 12, 2010

On a sunny Spring Sunday afternoon, we were looking for something to eat and decided to visit the Hermitage Inn. to say we were disapointed would be an understatement. The service was not great, the decor was old fashioned, and my partner described the presentation of the food as like school dinners!

we both felt ill afterwards too, and can only put this down to the mussells, which we shared.

i would not recommend this pub to anyone.

We booked bed and breakfast in advance after seeing pictures on the web, When we arrived we were informed that we would be required to pay in advance due to previous guests escaping down the fire escape without paying. We were given the key to our en- suite room and told it was upstairs. as we opened the door to the stairs the cold and the musty smell hit us, on entering our room it was even colder. The green 1970s bathroom suite had black mould growing around the shower tray and up the tiles, the walpaper was so damp it was coming off the wall, there was a fusty smell on the bed sheets and the inside of the windows were running in water. The radiator did not work but after informing the staff two small oil filled radiators were put in our room. My wife and i have stayed in numerous bed and breakfast accommodation but this is by far the worst. what a rip off

This is a pub with dining room attached (there is also a B&B, but I didn't stay there). The pub is OK...reasonable ales, fair few locals (why not!) and bar area resplendent with exposed beams, horse-brasses etc etc. We saw the "specials blackboard" and got enticed in.

It is possible to eat in the bar (preferable) but most diners are in the dining room (less preferable).

-Dining room decorated in a rather old-skool style: pastel pink walls, artex ceiling et al. Another even bigger annexe at the back...luckily avoided being seated there.

-Menu looked encouraging but failed to deliver. I had the home-made burger (inc. black pudding). This was dry, served in a white bun with no garnish, not even butter, and a side portion of what were obviously frozen chips. Very poor. They make a big play that the food is all freshly prepared...perhaps some of it is but don't let this fool you that you are about to get a local-gourmet experience. I suspect a lot of the food is frozen. The missus had the carvery. This was workmanlike. Nothing spectacular but a reasonably safe bet.

-Service was rather uncaring. Mixture of school kids doing evening jobs (neither confident nor particularly competent) and old-skool locals (competent but not particularly caring).

Summary: if you just want to stoke the furnaces, then come in and order the basics from the menu. If you want to experience a 70s dining experience then yes, come on down. If you want a more memorable meal then go elsewhere. Although we didn't spot anywhere better in the locality.

We went to Northumberland for a few nights, without any advanced booking for accommodation. After the tourist information office in Alnwick placed a booking at a B&B in Wakworth for one night (which was excellent). I saw the Hermitage Inn and decided to go and see if they had any accommodation for another two nights. We were lucky and I was offerered the family room at £80 per night for B&B.

The palce was very good the room was spacious with an en-suite and spotlessly clean. The food was excellent and so was the beer. The owner and his staff were extremley friendly and helpful. The Inn was very busy each night and we ate there three nights. This is obviously a good sign if the place is busy as there is a lot of competition in that area.

Warkworth is a great position to stay to visit Northumberland as it is very central to everything.
