“Great Resort”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 29, 2005

Firstly i would like to start of with the bad comments. The sandflies can be very annoying so plenty of repelent is a necessicity. The air conditioning in the room is poor. Although if you alow enough air flow through the shutters you should be ok for the night. Thats where the they end.

The pool is great very relaxing and clean with a great waterfall. The food was ok but could be better. The staff were great. They always had a smile on their faces and they enjoyed serving you. The excursions to other islands were great I would highly recommend the trip to Canoun. If you can explore the Raffles resort that would be a great bonus

Well this is a great resort right on the beach and plenty of things to do. I will definetly be returning to Palm Island

My husband and I spent 7 days in Palm Island after our wedding in June 2005. We found it really difficult to choose a honeymoon destination, and had some misgivings after reading certain negative reviews on here. However, we definitely made the right choice.

The island is idyllic. The 45 minute journey from Barbados means that it's off the beaten tourist track. The week we were there it certainly did not seem full - there were loads of free beach loungers and (double) hammocks on the beach and at the pool and you never felt crowded, as you can do in other resorts.

Our room (a beachfront) was lovely, with a large bed and walk-in shower. The air conditioning unit wasn't particularly effective, but this was mainly due to the open-air nature of the room. We tended to leave the slats open for a nice through-breeze! It was great to have a fully stocked fridge each day (beer and soft drinks).

I noticed that some of the reviews criticised the food. We eat out regularly and we thought the food was very good and there was plenty of it. The breakfast and lunch menus were the same each day but there was a lot of choice. The evening menus changed every day. Admittedly, some of the meals seemed better than others, but for an all-inclusive resort the food was excellent. The service was very good, and we never once thought it was slow - after all, what's the rush?!

The house wine was okay, nothing special, but the cocktails were wonderful! We can particularly recommend the Banana Colada, and the Palm Island Smile is pretty good too!

The main part of the resort (including the accommodation, main restaurant, pool and beach) covers perhaps a fifth of the island and is very well maintained, with employees constantly sweeping the paths and raking the sand. The rest of the island is more natural. There are residences on the island, but these are mostly holiday homes and were empty when we were there. We'd definitely recommend checking out the other beaches on the island. Try the picnic – it's worth it!

If you want to be waited on hand and foot this is not the place to go. We were never served drinks on the beach or at the pool, nor did we expect to be. What it is is a lovely, relaxed holiday location, perfect for those who want to get away from it all and who are happy to make their own entertainment!

My husband and I recently returned from a six-night stay at Palm Island. What a wonderful experience at a magical place!

The food was great with a nice variety of choices at each meal (dinner menu changed daily). The bar drinks were fabulous. I gained 10 pounds and it was worth every pound.

We quickly noticed that all the restaurant tables were set for two and chairs are arranged on the beach and at the pool for two. Lounge chairs are strategically placed so when you are in them, you don’t see any other people. A nice poolside addition was the mini-frig. It was stocked with soda, beer and juice.

The wildlife was evident everywhere you went. We heard birds and owls daily and saw iguanas and wild goats on the nature trails. The water surrounding the island was teeming with fish. We spotted a baby shark on one of the deserted beaches and found piles of beautiful shells just lying on the beach. I even found a large pink conch shell the size of a football that I took home. We enjoyed throwing bread into the water from the boat dock after dinner. The fish literally jumped out of the water. A good place for snorkeling was in front of the Reception Office (equipment provided). I have read that bugs can be a problem so we brought a lot of bug spray. The resort provides two cans of spray for the room and two bug coils, but to our surprise, we had no bug problems at all. We never used any of it.

But the best part of the entire vacation was the people we met. From the way the staff treated everyone like a VIP (they knew everyone’s name and always had a big smile and a “Good Morning” for you) to the wonderful guests that we met. I didn’t realize that we would meet so many nice and interesting people. We thoroughly enjoyed chatting with our new friends and comparing differences between countries with the guests that came from Europe. Since the majority of the couples were newlyweds, at first we felt a little out of place since we have been married for 18 years, but after a few days, we were like honeymooners also. It is a very romantic and special place.

It is true that the air conditioning is not the best, but it didn’t bother us. Our room was between 79 and 83 degrees. We loved the fresh air and the sounds of nature so much that we left the air off during the day and enjoyed the constant breezes. We found that if we kept the bathroom door closed and the two ceiling fans on high, it helped a lot.

Originally, we were concerned about the lack of nighttime activities and TV, so we brought our portable DVD player and six movies. Well, I think we watched one movie and it took us 2 viewings to finish it. We spent our evenings socializing with the other guests, enjoying a wonderful, relaxing dinner, walking in the moonlight, feeding the fish and counting the stars (no DVDs needed).

My wife and i have just returned from Palm Island and cannot praise it enough. Like other reviewers have said the efficiency of being met at the dock upon arrival by the manager and staff (with cocktails) to being quickly shown to our room without the hassle of filling in forms was just great after a long flight.
We had a Palmview room which was very large with a large bathroom with separate large shower room. And especially pleasing for me was a stocked fridge (restocked daily), which was just wonderful for me as i don't drink tea or coffee (at other all inclusive resorts we've been to in the caribbean i would have to wait for the restaurant or bar to open before i could get a drink). The room was also clean and well cared for by the excellent maids, and the pillow cards were a lovely touch.
The restaurants and bar were excellent with a great menu (changed daily) with excellent presentation and service.
All in all, a wonderful experience. Everything was better than we were expecting and all the members of staff were so friendly, smiling and efficient they are a real credit to Palm Island.
Unfortunately due to technical problems with our flight from Union Island to Barbados and getting through immigration there we just missed our Virgin flight back to London. Fortunately after getting very little help from Virgin holidays a lady called Claudette Levi-Farnum the Palm Island representative in Barbados bacame involved and immediately sorted out accomodation and transfers for our 2 day wait for the next Virgin flight home. We cannot thank Claudette and Elite Island Resorts enough for their prompt and efficient help in our predicament.
So once again if you need a wonderful resort with excellent service and staff go to Palm Island. You won't regret it.

My new husband and I just returned from our Honeymoon on Palm Island. I went into the vacation a little hesitant because of reviews I'd seen and my unfamiliarity with the location and resort. After a long day of traveling, we were both pleasantly surprised when we arrived.

The staff was fabulous. The first thing they made sure to do was get us some lunch seeing that we arrived at about 3pm and hadn't had anything to eat. They also took great care to learn our names and find out if we had any allergies. Everyone truly went above and beyond to make our stay enjoyable and make us feel comfortable and well taken care of.

I would highly recommend excursions on the Scaramouche (the sailboat featured in Pirates of the Caribbean). It was a day tour with stops at several islands for snorkeling. We also enjoyed a day snorkeling at the Tobago Cays on The Pink Lady. I was surprised when it was time for lunch, because while I was expecting plain sandwiches and chips, both trips provided a hot meal of chicken and various other sides. The snorkeling trip on The Pink Lady even had a beach barbeque that was fabulous!

It is true what people say, it is extremely quiet. If you like a lot of nighlife, this probably isn't the vacation for you. We found evenings to be really relaxing and calm.

My one suggestion for the resort would be to change the air conditioning units. The resort advertises having air conditioning in each room, but it actuality, it is only a small stand-alone unit that does not have enough power to get the room below about 84 degrees in the evening. There are two ceiling fans in the beachfront rooms and the breeze when the windows are open is fabulous, but when you want some privacy, you have to sweat for it! The sheets in the room are also very scratchy which combined with the heat, can be uncomforable.

All in all, I would completely recommend Palm Island to anyone who wants to get away from it all. It was refreshing to have no cell phones ringing and no tvs blaring. It is a quiet and relaxing vacation away for the traveler who wants a true retreat.

my husband and i were married on palm island on the 9th may and there are no words to describe just how beautiful this place is. The moment you set foot off the boat the staff and managers are there to greet you with a much needed rum punch. Then to dinner which was amazing, the menu changes every evening and there is always something you will like. Many thanks to Lennis ( the head waiter) who took the time to greet us every night and remember everyones names, which we thought was lovely. Every member of staff were very helpful and nothing was too much trouble for them, my husband had a beer waiting for him even before we got to the bar every evening which he thought was great! many thanks again to Jason, Vince, Paul and Ostin who put up with us and the very loud people that we met (marcus, claire, martin and steph) they even allowed us to go behind the bar and make our own cocktails after a few beers on board, needless to say no one wanted to drink the cocktails!!!
The wedding in itself was amazing, Jacqui the coordinator was really lovely and made the day very special for us. We opted to have the photographer which was no other than the island doctor/artist/general handyman called Doc, we would pay just to have him at our wedding because he was such a character. The cake was delicious, the setting was perfect and it was definetly the best way to get wed.
Overall the island was amazing, i would advise taking the bikes and going to the iguana trail, there were a couple of monsters up there. We also did a couple of excursions, the first was the Scaramous boat trip which was great fun and we went scuba diving on three occassions and having never dived before i thought it was breath taking, we even saw a couple of reef sharks. The snorkelling is just as good though especially at Tobago Cays.
On the whole this place is totally amazing, i dont know how anyone can find fault with it, and now im trying to persuade my hubby to take me back next year!! Heres hoping!

This was our third visit to Palm, our favourite holiday destination.
There have been many changes in managers, some good, some not so good.
Our first impression was regarding the beach, usually immaculate, but this visit showed lack of attention, normally the main beach is pristine, pure white clean beach, however, there had been no effort made to clean up the beach, and this is one of the most magnificent aspects of the resort. Having experienced such beauty, it is a shame to see the neglect.

There are of course many positive points, Lennus, (who quite frankly should be managing the island) was as always the epitomy of professionalism, friendly, a sheer delight to all, but had no control over the supplies and lack of staff on many ocassions. There were times at lunch and dinner where the five star resort simply did not function. ie: after one glass of Rose wine, we were told, "sorry", we have run out!, then, one waitress trying to serve the hotel guests and the guests from the visiting yachts, hence, poor poor service.
Breakfast fruit was "absent" yet PSV had an abundance of supplies.
The weekly BBQ was such a let down, not only did the food quality and quantity fail (some guests didn't even get a chance to taste any lobster) when it came to desert, two cakes for the whole resort, but not a plate or utensil to use in sight. this was poor for even a one star resort let alone a supposedly four/five star.
Management were "apologetic" as in, "will be sacking the chef", however, it was not realy the chefs fault, who was managing the supplies, managing the staffing levels, making sure the guests were catered for? Surely this is up to the manager? It costs a lot of money to visit Palm Island, apologies are not enough, the experience is there and then.
Had we been first time visitors we would not be returning, but knowing that Palm Island can be managed well, the beach looked after, food quality and service consistent, we may return, but will certainly look into who is managing the resort, and this time we will take into consideration the remarks from other visitors, as we dismissed the trip advisors comments, being biased!
On a positive note, Lennus, Osten, Bash, and many other staff members are a credit to Palm Island, each offering their own unique personalities, as are the housekeeping staff that we never seem to meet, they do a wonderful job. In our opinion it is the Island owner and management who hold the purse strings and power to make Palm Island that special resort it was during 2001 to 2004.
