“A Great Winter Day Trip”

Not a cloud in the sky. After a frosty start, the day was perfect to see Pelorus Sound in all its glory. Jim and Penny were so friendly and informative that it felt like you were on your own private charter. As we watched the mail getting dropped off at the various stops we got a glimpse of a different way of life. Jim and Penny were able to give us the back story to everyone we saw collecting their mail. Penguins, dolphins and birdlife also put in appearences throughout the day.
If you want a taste of real New Zealand, this is a great trip to do.

Fabulous host and assistant. Both very knowledgeable on the history of the Sounds and what is going on around the area up to date. Would recommend this trip to anyone touring the South Island of New Zealand. Max and Sue from Central Hawkes Bay, NZ.

“Great way to know Marlborough Sound”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 30, 2013

Jim and Penny have been great hosts and guides as they bring us through the sound; sharing stories of lives of people living in the sounds, bringing us through the green-shelled mussel farms, leading us to see wildlife such as australasian garnets, dusky dolphins and blue penguins... All these while doing their mail run.
A very relaxing and and informative cruise. Highly recommended.

“The hidden treasure of the South Island”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 27, 2013

As we boarded the mail boat at Havelock complete with our lunch box purchased from the Slip Inn we were welcomed aboard by the skipper Jim Baillie. Jim, a former Scot, left the family transport business and back packed his way to find the "best job in the world" The mail boat gave us a unique opportunity to enjoy this waterway whist delivering the mail to the isolated properties of the Sound. The skipper was able to provide an insight into his isolated customers who rely on his weekly service. The Sound is dotted with various mussel farms where the grow the popular green lipped variety. On the mail drop to Maud Island, a scientific reserve, we were introduced to the Giant Weta - a member of the insect family. The island provides a safe haven for the Weta which was almost exterminated. Our party of three had all read and seen photographs of the Marlborough Sound but we made the right decision to experience The Mail Boat in Pelorus Sound.
