Owner description: An all day cruise through the beautiful Marlborough Sounds delivering mail and groceries to remote and secluded properties. The Pelorus Sound is the largest of the Sounds and the Mail Boat is a lifeline to the people living in this boat access wonderland. You will hear a great selection of stories about life in the sounds, its history, and how the mail has been delivered like this since 1918.You will also get to experience the marine and bird life in the area including 5 types of Dolphins, Australasian Gannets, rare Shags, Seals and many more.A full Mussel Farm tour is also included and there is usually an opportunity to see the Mussel Boats operating during harvesting or seeding. We will stop off at a local lodge and passengers are able to buy lunch or bring your own lunch and come with us to a local farm for a tour. You will also be able to enjoy a bush walk or swim if you would like. We are now operating 7 days in summer, which is November to April.

What a great trip. We were booked for the Thursday but the weather turned, we rung to see if we could postpone to the Friday and Jim was so accommodating, saying he didn't want us to have a bad experience. Friday was a great day, we had a pod of dolphins hanging round the boat, and visitng the locals, including pet dogs and Kunekune pigs! Jim and Penny were funny, friendly and so knowledgable about the area, a great team. You have't seen the sounds until you been on this trip.

The highlight of my adventure in NZ, the mail boat run can not be described: you have to go! From the facts and stories from Jim and Penny to the dolphins and the Kunekune pigs coming to the warf for a dog biscuit to all the people who got and sent their mail because this mail run exists, you cannot miss this experience. So, better make reservations like I did!

The Pelorus Mail Boat was a fantastic experience, the best value tour/attraction from our entire trip. Jim and Penny were super knowledgeable about the area and so friendly and welcoming.
I felt at home when we were aboard the ship. It was a beautiful day out on the water and the people and scenery were super.

Jim definitely has the best postman job in the world, Penny too

The Pelorus Mail Boat was a fantastic experience and hands-down the best value tour/attraction from our entire trip. Jim and Penny were super knowledgeable about the area and even more friendly and welcoming. We felt like family when we were aboard the ship. It was a beautiful day out on the water and the scenery never got old. Jim definitely has the best job in the world - and it shows, which makes for nothing less than a great day out on the water. While out, we saw several Dusky and one Hector's dolphin. They came right up to the boat, which made for a great photo opportunity. We also saw penguins, hogs, and various seabirds.
If you are like us (American = very little vacation time) and finding that you're short on time trying to fit everything in during your trip to NZ, having a whole day set aside for the mail boat may seem crazy and like something you could "cut" from your trip, but that would be a HUGE MISTAKE. The mail boat is such good value and a great day out on the water, you are totally missing out if you don't find a way to fit this into your travel plans.
