“Icing on the cake”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 23, 2014

We found the Kaiuma - Nydia an enjoyable walk, if taxing at times, so the warm welcome we received from Tom on our arrival at "On the Track" gave us an indication of what was in store for us. While we looked around the grounds- excellent vegetable garden, and interesting historic artifacts, he brought out two large jugs of ice-cold water with lemon slices, followed by generous slices of Norma's delicious carrot cake and a bottomless supply of coffee.
We were invited to use the outdoor hot tub -a great way to relax. The rooms were scrupulously clean and gave out onto good views, and the beds very comfortable.
We then met Norma, a most gracious and witty hostess and a superb cook, as we were to find out at dinner.
I was very pleased to meet Duncan, who was every bit as warm a host and as patient in person as he had been in answering my several telephone inquiries.
Dinner was an excellent meal- several varieties of salads, roast vegetables, the nicest baked salmon that I have every tasted and a suitable desert- light and tasty.
Breakfast was up to the same standard and the lunches, individually wrapped and bagged were more than enough to sustain us on the easier climb to the Nydia Saddle and then down to Duncan Bay.
The Lodge was reasonably full on the night we stayed and our group were so impressed in Duncan, Tom and Norma's skill in remembering everyone's name and spending time with each group of guests.
There is also a pleasant lounge with a wide variety of books we were encouraged to chose from.
We think the Lodge is up to the standard of anywhere we had ever been to and they are gifted hosts. I will certainly be recommending to my guests that we spend time at the Lodge- whether by walking in or boating in, at their choice.
We were pleasantly surprised at the low tariff for the quality of service, facilities and food, considering that the cost included cost of travelling into Kaiuma and out from Duncan Bay.

Room Tip: We chose a chalet, close to the toilets and showers. We had a double bed upstairs and two single bed...

From the moment we walked into the Lodge Duncan, Tom and Norma treated us like long lost friends and took genuine interest in us. They seemed to anticipate our needs before we even had a chance to ask for anything and the food was fantastic. We stayed in the train carriage which was beautifully renovated. Truly kind and lovely hosts and a unique and wonderful experience. Thank you.

Excellent place to spend the night on the Nydia Track. The setting was beautiful and the hosts were extremely helpful, generous and had thought of everything. The evening meal was delicious. A definite must visit.

Tom and Norma offer a warm welcome and excellent personal service at their delightful luxury lodge on the Nydia track. The track itself is demanding, five hours in and five hours out, a bit rough in places with some scrambling, but if you can manage that, the welcome makes it well worthwhile .

Room Tip: Try the first class railway carriage for something a bit different

Superb hospitality in a very special place. No trip to New Zealand is complete without a tramp in the bush. If you are not a hiker then this is the one to do. A night of luxury sandwiched between two relatively easy days of walking.

Room Tip: The railway carriage is very special

We received the warmest welcome imaginable from Tom and Norma, they made us the best pot of (loose leaf) tea we have had in NZ and delicious (and I do not say that lightly) home made ginger flapjack. Everything was perfect. Luxury kitchen and lounge, hot tub, night in a First Class train carriage...and lots more. So much love and attention to detail has been put into making this such a lovely place. Our regret was to self cater, as I am sure by the standard of everything else, their meals would be just as amazing. Even if you are not walking the beautiful Nydia Track, take the mail boat here, this is not to be missed.

Loved our stay here, our cabin was perfect for our family of 5. Plenty for the kids to do, great library, clean and comfortable accommodation, great hosts, and amazing food! We just loved it here, did some walking but mostly chilled out in the peace and quiet. Fantastic location, we'll be back!

Room Tip: Take plenty of sandfly cream, they can be a pest in the summer.
