The cruise was excellent and I would highly recommend it. We boarded a beautiful, classic style boat and set off to the Sounds. Whilst we were sailing, it was fascinating to hear the informative commentary from the captain who was clearly passionate about his job and the area in which he grew up in. We stopped at a mussel farm to learn about the industry and then sampled some delicious green lip mussels with a glass of sauvignon blanc. The scenery throughout the trip was stunning - what better way to spend a day!

The cruise that is based in Picton is newer than the one based in Havelock and does not yet have a separate Travelocity posting I could find. The boat Is a large catamaran that comfortably accommodated the 41 customers in our group. The Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc en route was superb; the grilled salmon, steamed green shell mussels, and parsley potatoes served while anchored at the mussel farm were delectable. Our captain and cook was also an effective and entertaining guide to the intricacies and challenges of farming mussels.

Thank you so much for your excellent review, really appreciate the feedback.. Yes you are correct about it being the newer experience from Picton. We operate the Greenshell Mussel Cruise from Havelock Marina and also the Seafood Odyssea Cruise from Picton Marina. Greenshell Mussel Cruise has been operating over 9 years where Seafood Odyssea is a new cruise and is now live on Trip Advisor and just awaiting reviews.

For those of you who haven’t yet visited the Marlborough Sounds the geography is made up of four Sounds (drowned river valleys that were flooded after the ice age melt). From Picton marina out into the Queen Charlotte Sound and from Havelock marina into Pelorus Sound, Kenepuru Sound and the very small Mahau Sound. All the areas are very different, different scenery, wildlife, birdlife, land use and different Aquaculture (farming Mussels, Salmon and Oysters). Over all, the Marlborough Sounds makes up 1500km of coastline, so it’s a huge area to explore.

I am on my honeymoon with my husband and we had booked this as part of our trip. I would thoroughly recommend this. You not only get to see the sounds, but have lots of freshly cooked mussels accompanied by a couple of glasses of Sauvignon Blanc which suit the mussels and the afternoon in the sun perfectly. Scenery amazing, information and service provided by Hamish and John just the right amount so we now know about Greenshell mussel harvesting but also have an appreciation for the scenery. My husband doesn't even like mussels particularly but I couldn't keep him away from these fresh nippers! Would go on this again if we ever come here again.
Lovely afternoon and you get to learnt the best way to cook fresh mussels without fiddling with garlic and white wine ever again! GO ON THIS TRIP!!

My fiancé and I had a wonderful afternoon out on the boat. We really enjoyed learning about the mussel industry and taking in the stunning scenery. This is a must do when in the sounds .
