This was a late lunch stop for us whilst travelling from Golden Bay via Queen Charlotte Drive en route to the Interislander Ferry at Picton. The restaurant is off the main road passing through Havelock - follow the sign for “Commercial Wharf” down Cook Street and go right at the end which takes you into a large car park. The Slip Inn is by a slipway for moving boats in and out of the marina.
It has a modern interior and overlooks the marina and for us it was interesting to watch the activity whilst eating - a guy using a tractor to pull a boat out and avoid getting his feet wet. He managed it with some fine balancing. There is decking to sit outside if the weather permits - not an option for us on the day.
The menu at lunchtime was dominated by seafood as you would expect for the location however there were other options. Mains were around $14 to $24 (although there was a seafood platter to share for more than this), desserts were between $11 & $18 (cheeseboard).
I ordered a Warm Chicken Salad in a creamy coconut and white wine sauce which had tender chicken pieces and tasted very good. My wife opted for Pan Seared Gurnard served on a bed of salad with King Prawns and was very pleased with the dish (and she hasn’t always been overly keen on fish).
Service was pleasant enough - the young team weren’t overly pressed due to the small number of guests at the time of our visit.
By the time we added two glasses of Jules Taylor Sauvignon Blanc and a couple of coffees - all good - our bill came to $63 which we thought was value for money.
The toilets were very presentable.
Overall a modern place in good setting with tasty food.
