“Relaxing stop-over”
Reviewed September 4, 2009

Near Rouen, the Auberge de l'Abbaye is only 5 minutes from the A38 in a pretty village of historical interest (one 11th century Abbot became Archbishop of Canterbury). The rooms are adequate, to food reasonably priced, the welcome friendly and the breakfast a cur above average.

If you have dreamed of sitting outside a half timbered French Inn, in a a quiet village with a glass of wine or a beer in your hand, then this is the place to come.

Bedecked in flowers, the Auberge de l'Abbaye welcomes you to the wonderful surroundings of an 18th century coaching Inn whose half-timbered façade recalls Normandy of long ago. Low beamed ceilings and table cloths add to the setting. There is an oft-repeated phrase about the culinary reputation of its restaurant: "The homemade apple pie is the best in Normandy and in itself is worth the journey". The food is quite remarkable with a four course dinner each night and many locals coming from far and wide. The owner was quite prepared to adapt the courses to cater for our 9 and 11 year old boys so that they were able to accompany us at Dinner. We were spoilt for choice and our boys were looked after beautifully.

Breakfasts were typically continental but a variety of cooked eggs were also offered if we wished - "pour Les Anglais". we were more than happy to gorge on the wonderfull fresh bread and pastries with delicious preserves. Coffe was excellent, but the French don't do Tea very well (an alien concept for them) so perhaps take your own tea bags!

A narrow staircase leads to the very comfortable guest rooms with en-suite bathroom, showers, toilet, dial phone and alarm clock. Bedrooms are decorated in light pretty colours with plenty of storage space and some have a small sitting area.

The Inn stands in the peaceful village which is on the road to the Norman Abbey of Le Bec Hellouin, which is well worth a visit. Within easy drive are Monet's garden at Giverny, the "mini Versailles" at Chateau du Champ de Bataille, The ruins of Richard the Lionheart's castle at Chateau -Gaillard in Les Andelys, Rouen, Honfleur and many other great spots.

We left this charming Inn and its most helpful owners vowing that we would return to savour its charms again. It fulfilled all our dreams of a french Auberge.

  • Liked — Fantastic Food , comfy rooms and excellent value.
  • Disliked — French Tea.
