“Great base for touring Lauca NP and environs”
Reviewed January 22, 2014

We spent 3 nights here in November. We engaged Terrace Lodge's owner, Flavio, to pick us up at our hotel in Arica and take us to the lodge. On the way, we stopped for lunch and visited a small nature sanctuary and an Inca ruin. We also hired him to do two day tours - one into Lauca National Park and the other to the north of the park. Our focus was bird watching, animal life and scenery. Flavio is Italian, speaks excellent English, knows his birds and animals, and is refreshingly cosmopolitan. His philosophy is it makes more sense to hire him to see Lauca than to do a self-drive because he's no more expensive and knows where to go. I agree. You can, from what I saw, self-drive most of Lauca with a non 4-wheel drive vehicle but having one, and an experienced driver, lets you get places and spend your time sight-seeing rather than watching for loose sand and ruts. If you are driving by yourself, see if he still has maps available for sale. Flavio has made an excellent, professional map of the area.

The Lodge is very nice. It's well described in previous comments. They have their own septic system so you can flush their provided toilet paper, which is a treat. (If you've travelled before in the Andes, you know what I mean.) They also have their own generator sytem which proved handy when the city power went off one morning. It's quite a smart little place. Flavio's wife runs and cleans it, while Flavio does the tours and the long-hauls to Arica for supplies.

I'm giving this 4 stars because of the tours we did and relative to the other available lodging in Putre

Room Tip: There are 5 attached units. We had room 3 and it was pretty quiet. We had guests on either side, bu...

Thanks for the 4 stars!
I want to add that taking a tour with us add safety to any trip in this areas. At moment of writing I'm the only operator which always travel with oxygen, pulse oximeter, first aid kit and, the most important, satellite phone. I could tell you real stories of tourist found in the desert or at almost 5,000 meters. They are still alive today but they will have something to talk about....

I'm also one of the very few in Putre who have attended a first aid course.

About the Wi-Fi. Some brands of smart phones and tablets are weaker than others. I have tested them anytime a client asked me for the Wi-Fi. Now I can almost predict which brand will have problem to connect. It is not much a problem of the room because the signal reaches well the pergola in the garden, more distant than any room. With my smart phone or tablet I can easily connect from any room.
I can't say here which brand is the weaker but it is the one that most people think is the best.

We are trying to buy a second router but there is no availability since months and there is only one company offering a relatively good service in the area. Any guest can use our public PCs in the public area until 8:30 p.m.

Thanks again.
Flavio

We booked the Terrace Lodge for two nights in November based on a recommendation by the our travel agency and good Tripadvisor reviews. We were not disappointed and had a good stay. This is a very small lodge ( I believe just 5 units) on the edge of Putre. As mentioned before, rooms are rather compact but based on previous comments by the owner of the lodge this seems to make sense due to the limited heating capacities available. Room was fine and warm during the night, the beds comfortable and the bathroom clean with a decent shower.

When you enter the room you a greeted by a sign with a rather long list of Do’s and Don’t’s . Some of the things forbidden are “eating in bed” and “putting luggage on the beds” . Kinda reminds you of school camp.

However, especially given the limitations of Putre we felt comfortable and happy with our choice. We received a nice welcome by the owner after a rather late arrival due to some extensive road works between Iquique and Arica. English is well spoken which is very helpful in this rather remote corner of the country.

Breakfast served was continental, as advertised, with instant coffee and pineapple juice, pancakes, cheese, ham, cereals and jam and yogurt. Not huge, but good and enough to get you started. As everything in the lodge it was served with a personal touch. Breakfast was served between 8am and 9am.

WHAT PREVENTS US DROWNING IN A QUAGMIRE OF ANARCHY AND EXCESS? RULES.

Dear guest, thanks for your honest and useful review.
We take advantage of this reply to explain about the "Do’s and Don’t’s”.
>>Some of the things forbidden are “eating in bed” and “putting luggage on the beds”<<
If all the hotel guests would be as polite as You have been we wouldn't care to write the following answers which sound as a “preach”.

The reason of these rules are very simple and valid worldwide. The beds are for sleeping and relaxing. For eating there are tables, desks, benches and the indoor public area. Unfortunately not all the guests are polite enough when eating and drinking in a bed. We don't want to have problems with juices, coffee, red wine, marmalade etc. on a blank sheet or even on the mattress. We have even found rests of ham and cheese in a bed.

About the “putting luggage on the beds”: just think at what a luggage encounters during a journey: aircraft, airport, luggage deposits, bus and, the worst of all, roads and platforms. What do luggage wheels smash while rolling on those places? There is no need to answer. And would you put that dirt on the bed where you sleep? There are other rules about not storing fuels and not cooking in the room. Would you be happy to have a bomb next to your room? Yes, we had guest cooking and storing gas and petrol in the room!

We know that it is not common to find those rules written down in a hotel room but those rules apply to most accommodation worldwide, even when they are not written. The difference is that some hoteliers put the conditions black on white. Invest a few minutes surfing the Web for these key words: HOTEL RULES or ACCOMMODATION RULES. There are hundreds of millions of results.

The rules at Terrace Lodge, we are sure you'll agree, amount to no more than common sense. We do hope in your comprehension, and sorry for the preach ;-) which is not addressed to You but to those who think that their holidays are without rules to respect.

We are thanking You because your review –and our answers- are helping us and our guests to know and understand each other.
Many Thanks and warm regards from the management of Terrace Lodge.

The Lodge was a bit of a mixed bag. The hosts were very friendly and welcoming but the room was very basic and chilly. The scenery travelling over the border from Bolivia was stunning and well worth the time.

Dear client. We think you sent by mistake your review to Terrace Lodge instead of the Hotel where you have spent the night before coming to Putre. The "very basic and chilly" description has nothing to do with Terrace Lodge.
The rooms at Terrace Lodge are not "very basic": if the photos are not enough to explain, we remind you that they have en-suite bathroom, wall hair drier, 24 hours hot water and heating, orthopedic mattresses with two duvets, digital safe box, Wi-Fi, wardrobe, chair and small desk.
The rooms at Terrace Lodge are NOT chilly, otherwise it is very difficult to explain why you removed the duvet from you bed (you placed it in the wardrobe...).
We are asking you to correct your mistake and send that review to the right hotel.
Regards.

My husband and I went to Putre during the Sept. 18th festivities to get away from all the noise. Best idea ever!
We arrived to Terrace Lodge in the evening and were welcomed by Patricia, the very energetic, pleasant, and informative host. We were given all the tips and advice we needed for what to do, where to go, what´s open and what´s not in the town, and how to deal with altitude sickness.
The rooms were very well heated, the bed was comfortable, and the shower was delicious.
The breakfast was perfect! Warm bread, cheese, ham, yogurt, fresh juice, coffee/tea/mate de coca, fruit, jam, and even a delicious homemade pancake! Perfect way to start the day.
We couldn´t resist buying their amazing and informative map. We would have been completely lost without it, as there was very little information anywhere else during our stay in Putre (even at our other hotel).
We could only stay one night, as all the other nights were already booked! Reserve well in advance, as this is a popular place!
We are definitely coming back here!

Room Tip: I suppose all rooms are the same. So... any of them! Just reserve in advance!

If in need of one or more nights in Putre, you can't go wrong with Terrace Lodge. Rooms are simple and basic but it is exactly what you need for a good rest, nothing more, nothing less. Flavio and Patricia were helpful to sell us extra gasoline. Being italians we did expect a better than average breakfast even for Chilean standards, it was not bad but something it could be improved.

Thanks for reviewing Terrace Lodge & Tours.
Help us to improve telling us what you expected to have at breakfast that was not served.
At the moment (September 25th) our continental breakfast includes: hot drink (tea, mate, coffee or/and milk); natural fruit juice; bread; marmalade; butter; homemade fruit pancake; yogurt; ham; cheese; biscuits; tangerines fruits.
Keep in mind that in a small, familiar lodge, the breakfast can't be the same served in a 4-5 stars hotel, where the price charged is of course the same charged by us. We travel ourselves in Chile and abroad and for that price (charged at Terrace) we have never found a good breakfast unless paying much more in hotels.
Many thanks and regards.
We look forward to receive suggestions ;-)

This Lodge is located in Putre, Chile, about 140km. from Arica. it´s a nice open door to the Altiplano. the owners are nice and always willing to give hints and support.
The rooms are nice with a wonderdul view of the valley. The map they offer, which can also be bought at the Azapa Museum in Arica, is a good help to the rough trip around the Altiplano.

Good heaters in the room, which are necessary at night. Hot showers available 24hrs.

Some services in the hotel could be improved, like the availabitly to a TV, or to sell water or fresh drinks.

Many thanks for your review :-)
Since we and our guest want to rest at night, especially after the demanding tours in the highlands, we have decided to offer the tranquility as a "must have" at Terrace Lodge. That is the reason we don't want (and do not allow) TV, radios etc. For the same reason we sometimes ask the guests to turn the noisy car alarm off. Everybody wants to rest, at night and during the day too.
About the drinks: people prefer to buy drinks in Arica -before coming to Putre- and at the nearby shops. We do continue to serve tea, mates, coffee, cappuccino and fresh fruit juice. Carbonated soft drinks are not sold and not suggested because they cause stomach ache due to the low atmospheric pressure of the area (62% in Putre and 58% in the highlands) .
Any other suggestion is welcome ;-)

Flavio ia a perfect guide, he knows more about this area and he is an expert about plants and wild animals. And, the least but not the last, is a professional photographer.
The excursion are fantastic!
The room are clean and comfortable. The breakfast is great too. (Thank you Patrizia!)

In a few weeks I will add new excursions from Putre and Arica. Useless to say I will be the only one to show other remote areas.
Thanks again.
