“Excellent hospitality!”
Reviewed September 25, 2013

My husband and I went to Putre during the Sept. 18th festivities to get away from all the noise. Best idea ever!
We arrived to Terrace Lodge in the evening and were welcomed by Patricia, the very energetic, pleasant, and informative host. We were given all the tips and advice we needed for what to do, where to go, what´s open and what´s not in the town, and how to deal with altitude sickness.
The rooms were very well heated, the bed was comfortable, and the shower was delicious.
The breakfast was perfect! Warm bread, cheese, ham, yogurt, fresh juice, coffee/tea/mate de coca, fruit, jam, and even a delicious homemade pancake! Perfect way to start the day.
We couldn´t resist buying their amazing and informative map. We would have been completely lost without it, as there was very little information anywhere else during our stay in Putre (even at our other hotel).
We could only stay one night, as all the other nights were already booked! Reserve well in advance, as this is a popular place!
We are definitely coming back here!

Room Tip: I suppose all rooms are the same. So... any of them! Just reserve in advance!

If in need of one or more nights in Putre, you can't go wrong with Terrace Lodge. Rooms are simple and basic but it is exactly what you need for a good rest, nothing more, nothing less. Flavio and Patricia were helpful to sell us extra gasoline. Being italians we did expect a better than average breakfast even for Chilean standards, it was not bad but something it could be improved.

Thanks for reviewing Terrace Lodge & Tours.
Help us to improve telling us what you expected to have at breakfast that was not served.
At the moment (September 25th) our continental breakfast includes: hot drink (tea, mate, coffee or/and milk); natural fruit juice; bread; marmalade; butter; homemade fruit pancake; yogurt; ham; cheese; biscuits; tangerines fruits.
Keep in mind that in a small, familiar lodge, the breakfast can't be the same served in a 4-5 stars hotel, where the price charged is of course the same charged by us. We travel ourselves in Chile and abroad and for that price (charged at Terrace) we have never found a good breakfast unless paying much more in hotels.
Many thanks and regards.
We look forward to receive suggestions ;-)

This Lodge is located in Putre, Chile, about 140km. from Arica. it´s a nice open door to the Altiplano. the owners are nice and always willing to give hints and support.
The rooms are nice with a wonderdul view of the valley. The map they offer, which can also be bought at the Azapa Museum in Arica, is a good help to the rough trip around the Altiplano.

Good heaters in the room, which are necessary at night. Hot showers available 24hrs.

Some services in the hotel could be improved, like the availabitly to a TV, or to sell water or fresh drinks.

Many thanks for your review :-)
Since we and our guest want to rest at night, especially after the demanding tours in the highlands, we have decided to offer the tranquility as a "must have" at Terrace Lodge. That is the reason we don't want (and do not allow) TV, radios etc. For the same reason we sometimes ask the guests to turn the noisy car alarm off. Everybody wants to rest, at night and during the day too.
About the drinks: people prefer to buy drinks in Arica -before coming to Putre- and at the nearby shops. We do continue to serve tea, mates, coffee, cappuccino and fresh fruit juice. Carbonated soft drinks are not sold and not suggested because they cause stomach ache due to the low atmospheric pressure of the area (62% in Putre and 58% in the highlands) .
Any other suggestion is welcome ;-)

We have been in Putre for three days...the best of the holiday.
Flavio ia a perfect guide, he knows more about this area and he is an expert about plants and wild animals. And, the least but not the last, is a professional photographer.
The excursion are fantastic!
The room are clean and comfortable. The breakfast is great too. (Thank you Patrizia!)

In a few weeks I will add new excursions from Putre and Arica. Useless to say I will be the only one to show other remote areas.
Thanks again.

We only stayed one night on july 28th 2013, driving back from Arica to La Paz. We stopped in Putre because it is close to Lauca national park and it's probably the best place to stop between the 2 cities.

The Lodge is VERY clean, there was plenty of hot water and pressure (we were really looking forward to a hot shower after a few nights in a hostel).

The owners are very friendly, the guy spoke french, english, italian and spanish, and they were very welcoming. They take good care of the facilities. The breakfast was included and was very good, fresh food. The bed and sheets were very comfortable, and there was heating in the room, which was good for our stay in july (their winter).

the site is clean, and the view on the mountains is amazing. Putre is a bit middle of nowhere so we could see the stars and the milky way very well at night.

I really have nothing bad to say about this place, I definitely recommend !!!
I have been 2 times in Chile, Peru and bolivia and pricewise this is one of the best places I slept in.

We stayed two nights in a very nice room, clean bathroom, quiet pleasant place, and fortunately not in a very cold night of June. For the price, I expected better accommodations. Limited breakfast time, 8:00 to 9:00! Food and service OK, nothing special that called our attention. No way to heat water for a cup of coffee or tea at night. Slow heating system in the room. The common breakfast area / reception closes at 8:30 p.m. Next time I would choose a place that is more welcoming.

Room Tip: I assume the rooms are all the same

Thanks for writing a review to Tripadvisor.
The following answers will try to lighten some "dark areas" of your review.

You wrote: "For the price, I expected better accommodations." Could you please tell us what you expected for the price? Did you book directly or via an overpriced agent?

You wrote: "Limited breakfast time, 8:00 to 9:00!"
This is the time our clients (80% European) ask. The time can be anticipated to 7.:30 whenever a guest asks. By 9 hour the guests are already heading to the highlands beauties.

You wrote: "No way to heat water for a cup of coffee or tea at night."
The clients asking for such a service are 3 in 100 because after dinner they immediately go to sleep and rest. Those who want to have a drink ask for a thermos and cup or go to the nearby restaurants.

You wrote: "Slow heating system in the room." The electric heating takes about 15 minutes to heat up. The temperature you have in the room is higher than 19º in winter and higher than 22º in summer. By law we must respect a minimum of 18º.

You wrote: "The common breakfast area / reception closes at 8:30 p.m."
There is no point to keep a public area open if the request is close to zero. We are the first to tell people to rest well and enough in order to reduce (or avoid) health problems related to the altitude sickness.

Thanks again for the review and best regards from Terrace Lodge.

This is probably the cleanest accommodation that we stayed in while we were in Chile (which was for a long time). The owners are extremely professional and accomodating, and the whole Terrace Lodge complext is pretty as it is set in a magical Putre. A couple of small points though: It's very cold at night in Putre and the heating is insufficient. We were cold our entire stay there. There is a small oil column heater, but this doesn't heat the room sufficiently and because there are no extra blankets we had to wear extra layers in bed. Also, there is nowhere to go other than your room. Outside it is cold, and while you can sit in the sun the benches are quite spartan. At night the owners lock up the living/breakfast room space. While this is fine, the room is quite small and you do feel a bit trapped. It would be nice if there was a kettle/jug in the room so at least you could have a hot drink in your cold room. Terrace Lodge is a nice place to spend a couple of days, but it is quite spartan. The breakfast was nice as well.

Thanks Julia W for your nice review.
We take advantage of this useful tool to explain something about the heating and the temperatures in Putre and in Terrace Lodge.
As we always say, temperature is something everybody can measure in Celsius or Fahrenheit. To feel cold or warm is subjective of each person. The rooms are heated independently for this reason and each guest (in each room) can get temperature which can get easily higher than 20 Celsius.
also, all beds are equipped with duck feather duvet. Honestly, there is nothing we can do if somebody feels cold at 20º.

You write that "the room is quite small". It is 17 square meters. We know of accommodation with bigger rooms and of their clients who complain because the heating doesn't reach 15º. It is natural that the bigger the room, the more difficult is to warm it up. That's why we chose a medium sized room.

"Outside it is cold, and while you can sit in the sun the benches are quite spartan." The benches are wooden, made to withstand the mountain weather 12 months a year. While it is true that lazy chairs could be used instead, it is also true that any improvement in the lodge will reflect in a higher price, which we want to keep reasonable and affordable. We challenge anybody to find our services for that price in Putre. They include free use of PCs and Internet, Wi-Fi, independent heating, wall hair drier, in room digital safe box, private and fenced parking area, staff in 5 languages, modest book sharing, breakfast with homemade bread, homemade juice and homemade pancakes etc. etc.

About the kettle or jug, we give them to any guest who asks for it. We could probably publicize this service.
Thanks again for the review. Whatever a guest writes, it is always good and useful to know his/her opinion. Sometimes it is thanks to a critic that a company can improve.

Best regards from Terrace Lodge and Putre
