“Very nice place to stay in Chile”
Reviewed August 3, 2013

We only stayed one night on july 28th 2013, driving back from Arica to La Paz. We stopped in Putre because it is close to Lauca national park and it's probably the best place to stop between the 2 cities.

The Lodge is VERY clean, there was plenty of hot water and pressure (we were really looking forward to a hot shower after a few nights in a hostel).

The owners are very friendly, the guy spoke french, english, italian and spanish, and they were very welcoming. They take good care of the facilities. The breakfast was included and was very good, fresh food. The bed and sheets were very comfortable, and there was heating in the room, which was good for our stay in july (their winter).

the site is clean, and the view on the mountains is amazing. Putre is a bit middle of nowhere so we could see the stars and the milky way very well at night.

I really have nothing bad to say about this place, I definitely recommend !!!
I have been 2 times in Chile, Peru and bolivia and pricewise this is one of the best places I slept in.

We stayed two nights in a very nice room, clean bathroom, quiet pleasant place, and fortunately not in a very cold night of June. For the price, I expected better accommodations. Limited breakfast time, 8:00 to 9:00! Food and service OK, nothing special that called our attention. No way to heat water for a cup of coffee or tea at night. Slow heating system in the room. The common breakfast area / reception closes at 8:30 p.m. Next time I would choose a place that is more welcoming.

Room Tip: I assume the rooms are all the same

Thanks for writing a review to Tripadvisor.
The following answers will try to lighten some "dark areas" of your review.

You wrote: "For the price, I expected better accommodations." Could you please tell us what you expected for the price? Did you book directly or via an overpriced agent?

You wrote: "Limited breakfast time, 8:00 to 9:00!"
This is the time our clients (80% European) ask. The time can be anticipated to 7.:30 whenever a guest asks. By 9 hour the guests are already heading to the highlands beauties.

You wrote: "No way to heat water for a cup of coffee or tea at night."
The clients asking for such a service are 3 in 100 because after dinner they immediately go to sleep and rest. Those who want to have a drink ask for a thermos and cup or go to the nearby restaurants.

You wrote: "Slow heating system in the room." The electric heating takes about 15 minutes to heat up. The temperature you have in the room is higher than 19º in winter and higher than 22º in summer. By law we must respect a minimum of 18º.

You wrote: "The common breakfast area / reception closes at 8:30 p.m."
There is no point to keep a public area open if the request is close to zero. We are the first to tell people to rest well and enough in order to reduce (or avoid) health problems related to the altitude sickness.

Thanks again for the review and best regards from Terrace Lodge.

This is probably the cleanest accommodation that we stayed in while we were in Chile (which was for a long time). The owners are extremely professional and accomodating, and the whole Terrace Lodge complext is pretty as it is set in a magical Putre. A couple of small points though: It's very cold at night in Putre and the heating is insufficient. We were cold our entire stay there. There is a small oil column heater, but this doesn't heat the room sufficiently and because there are no extra blankets we had to wear extra layers in bed. Also, there is nowhere to go other than your room. Outside it is cold, and while you can sit in the sun the benches are quite spartan. At night the owners lock up the living/breakfast room space. While this is fine, the room is quite small and you do feel a bit trapped. It would be nice if there was a kettle/jug in the room so at least you could have a hot drink in your cold room. Terrace Lodge is a nice place to spend a couple of days, but it is quite spartan. The breakfast was nice as well.

Thanks Julia W for your nice review.
We take advantage of this useful tool to explain something about the heating and the temperatures in Putre and in Terrace Lodge.
As we always say, temperature is something everybody can measure in Celsius or Fahrenheit. To feel cold or warm is subjective of each person. The rooms are heated independently for this reason and each guest (in each room) can get temperature which can get easily higher than 20 Celsius.
also, all beds are equipped with duck feather duvet. Honestly, there is nothing we can do if somebody feels cold at 20º.

You write that "the room is quite small". It is 17 square meters. We know of accommodation with bigger rooms and of their clients who complain because the heating doesn't reach 15º. It is natural that the bigger the room, the more difficult is to warm it up. That's why we chose a medium sized room.

"Outside it is cold, and while you can sit in the sun the benches are quite spartan." The benches are wooden, made to withstand the mountain weather 12 months a year. While it is true that lazy chairs could be used instead, it is also true that any improvement in the lodge will reflect in a higher price, which we want to keep reasonable and affordable. We challenge anybody to find our services for that price in Putre. They include free use of PCs and Internet, Wi-Fi, independent heating, wall hair drier, in room digital safe box, private and fenced parking area, staff in 5 languages, modest book sharing, breakfast with homemade bread, homemade juice and homemade pancakes etc. etc.

About the kettle or jug, we give them to any guest who asks for it. We could probably publicize this service.
Thanks again for the review. Whatever a guest writes, it is always good and useful to know his/her opinion. Sometimes it is thanks to a critic that a company can improve.

Best regards from Terrace Lodge and Putre

We recently spent several days based at Putre at Terrace Lodge. Each day we went with Flavio, who owns the lodge, to travel the antiplano for wildlife. It was a highlight of our trip to South America. Flavio has spent years seeking out special places and the scenery blows your mind. The cost of the accommodation and tours is not particularly cheap but the value for money you get by taking on the touring options with Flavio is exceptional. We saw all camelids and a suit of endemic species.

Hi Penny! I'm just back from Argentina. I was at Iguazu waterfalls, where they also run full moon tours. Here we don't have waterfalls but volcanoes, lakes and lagoons; maybe organizing short full moon tours cold be a good idea... what do you think?
A sincere thanks from Patrizia and I.

We stayed here 3 nights in a double bed and really enjoyed the clean, spacious rooms and nice bathroom. The grounds are pretty as well. The photos that have been posted by the management are true to form. Breakfast was good, and the service was friendly. If you rent a car, you will absolutely need to purchase the map. We would stay here again.

Located right at the beginning of Putre, it has few rooms but the service is good and the owners are friendly and helpful. They provide all the information you need to explore the area and they also sell a good map if you want go to Surire and Colchane. If you are not feeling well when you arrive in Putre ( which is possible because of the great altitude ) you can ask them for advice on what to do.The rooms are comfortable and have heating.

Room Tip: Book in advance if you want double bed.

We stayed for two nights in August. Wish we could have stayed longer. Comfortable rooms with good-sized baths, firm beds and a portable heater. Easy walk into the main square of this small town. And Flavio and Patrizia are great hosts - full of information and enthusiasm. Don't leave this lodge without purchasing a copy of Flavio's excellent map of the area - from Arica to Parque Lauca. It is invaluable to any one traveling with their own transportation.
