This was our second visit to The Sands! We celebrated our wedding anniversary at The Sands in May of 2018 and couldn't wait to return to celebrate our 43rd anniversary this year! We've met so many guests who return every year, some up to 15 years and hopefully we can make this our home away from home as well. We wanted to share what we love about this resort and how to make the stay enjoyable.
If you like uncrowded, smaller resorts (I think their resort is under 120 rooms) where you are not lying on a lounge chair, elbow to elbow with other guests, like to enjoy pools where there are pretty quiet little spots and runs through the middle of the resort and a gorgeous white sandy beach, which is truly private, as there are no hotels directly on either side of The Sands and best of all, enjoy a screened in patio or balcony where you can watch the sunrise and sunset without worrying about insects or a sprinkle outside...then you will absolutely love this resort!
We have only stayed in the "Oceanfront" rooms in Building #3, which is closest to the beach, pool and Hemingway's, the resort's restaurant. The views are amazing! This building also has an elevator. So if you are mobility challenged, as I am, after two spine surgeries and residual issues, the pool, beach and restaurant are easily accessible. The resort is not that large, so honestly, all the rooms are not far at all from the pools and ocean.
Reading some reviews, there were questions about Oceanview and Oceanfront rooms. What we found easier, if you have any questions, was to book directly with the reservation staff. They answered all of our questions and described each room in detail, very familiar with the resort. If you have any special requests, this is also the way to book the resort. They try their best to honor the requests...we've never been disappointed. We stayed in a one bedroom suite, overlooking the pool and Grace Bay Beach with a wrap around porch, lounges and picnic table, screened in porch. The day never ended, as you can listen to the music after dinner at Hemingway's from your room. A full kitchen and washer and dryer...amazing room! We were given a bottle of champagne, also, to celebrate our anniversary. Dreamy, romantic getaway in 2018.
We noticed the view from the Oceanfront Studio rooms in the same building, #3, were amazing too..same as the one bedroom, overlooking the pool and ocean, screened in balcony, two lounges, separate living room with smaller refrig, toaster, microwave, sink. It was perfect! Best of all...we entered the room and on the best were rose petals with two beautiful swans, made from towels, kissing a bottle of champagne! The bathtub also had rose petals floating on sudsy bubbles! What a romantic greeting from the Staff...they are amazing and make you feel very special! Love you guys! Thank you!
The pool staff and beach staff...friendly and so helpful! Don't be afraid to politely ask for help, especially if you need help getting down to the beach. I've seen mobility challenged guests being helped down to their chairs, already set up by the staff.
Russ...you are awesome! Russ, one of the beach staffers, helped set up four lounge chairs and umbrellas each day during our stay. We appreciated all he did to make our trip an enjoyable one. All of the beach and pool staff have always been friendly. They have pool and beach toys..ask for them at the beach hut.
The beach, in May, was never crowded. Never are there rows of lounge chairs where you are touching the person next to you. There are no adjoining resorts on either side, so the beach is very quiet and the color of the water...just gorgeous. Also have to say thank you to Sandra, who walked the beach all day, taking drink and food orders and always had a smile and took a minute to chat. It's not easy to walk the sand on hot sunny days. We so appreciated yummy frozen cocktails and a friendly face!
Hint...the day of arrival. I read reviews where they said the room wasn't ready on arrival.. On our second visit, we packed a small bag with our bathing suits and coverups and suntan lotion. The staff will direct you where to change. That way, you can enjoy a dip in the pool, or ocean and get a bite to eat at Hemingway's, which is adjacent to the pool. Yes, it's open air dining, but the restaurant is swimwear friendly, as long as you have a cover-up, sandals and/or t-shirt cover-up for the guys, so you can cool off in the pool, dry up for a minute or two and then enjoy feeling cooler while dining. Definitely make reservations for dinner so you can enjoy the beautiful sunsets.. If you eat dinner by 6-6:30, by dessert time, you can watch the amazing sunsets from your seat or take a few steps to the beach and watch the sunset or have a romantic walk on the beach.
Definitely go on excursions. Sisco, helped us book a romantic catamaran sunset cruise. Go to the pool/towel hut. There should be someone there who can help you book snorkeling excursions or other fun half day or full day boat outings. Sisco was so helpful and we cannot say enough about the sunset cruise...the sunset in Grace Bay is something that you will remember forever. Fun, music, rum punch..perfect!
Also..go enjoy the island! There is a gourmet food store, Graceway Gourmet, about a 5 minute drive from the hotel. Day two, take a trip there and stock up on waters, snacks, fruit, bakery items, eggs, if you have a stove, or use the microwave.
Fresh conch is something that everyone should try..they are well known for this in Turks. We always take a trip to Bugaloos Conch Crawl...hidden off the road, on the other side of the island, where the tables are carved from wood and set around a tree, which is a natural umbrella! Full bar and menu and also live music. Check their schedule before you go.
If you are traveling during the summer and want to avoid busy check in, you might want to take a very early flight, arrive before lunch and have your swimwear and beach bag ready, so you can enjoy the resort, while they get your room ready and avoid busy check in times.
We love The Sands, the staff, the amazing views, the peach and tranquility, no loud bars all evening and way they make you feel welcome. The garden view rooms, facing the pool, looked nice too. Not too familiar with them, but, again, best to call the hotel directly and speak with the reservations staff and they can describe the room, the views, Ocean front vs.. ocean view.
Looking forward to returning to paradise. Enjoy your visit, everyone!
