Review of South African Airways

I took a few flights with South African airlines in June, all internal flights.
They all operated either on time or ahead of schedule.
The planes were very very clean and comfortable with decent food on board.
Check in was easy and both ground staff and inflight staff were very friendky and helpful.
I found them very reliable and I'd have no hesitation in booking with South African Airlines again.

Our first flight ever with SAA and we were not sure what to expect. We had a challenge with our Virgin Australia FF numbers as the system kept saying we were Virgin Atlantic members (VA versus VS). Staff did not get this at all and it was really hard dealing with their ground staff.

We were in seats 17EF and originally the plane was to be an A320. In the end, it was an old 737 so this row was exit row. So we could stretch out.

The snack and drink were fine.

We were bussed out to the plane and sat for a hour without an explanation before taking off. So we arrived late into Maputo.

Very friendly staff... and that's about it. The lunch/dinner was the worst I have experienced in 20 years of heavy flying. I am also not getting why the only difference between a child and a normal meal was, that the child got a spicy salad (not many children like that), while we got a "normal" salad. Entertainment system ex WDH ok, ex MRU "non existent" (due to a tiny A320 shorthaul plane).

Well at least this time we got the type of jet we had picked seats for. Still, it was a cramped flight with no legroom and an older jet. And as usual it ran over an hour late with no explanation.

This started as we entered the plain there was a distinct odour of staleness (polite description), the seats were hard and the entertainment system was a throw back to the nineties,the system had to be restarted three times during the flight, the menu choice was announced over the annoy system and they then apologised if they could not provide you with your choice BEFORE they started the meal service, sure enough we were informed there was no meat option so we both declined the second option, then they told a mother with a small child that no children's meals were available ???, we were then strangely offered the meat option how and why did this suddenly appear, finally i have flown all over the place for some 40 years and for the first time ever i had to use a blanket as the air conditioning was creating a very cold flight, the young stewards on the back left hand side of the plane was completely rude and off hand to several passengers, Never again, i invite them to come and talk to me.
