Review of KLM Royal Dutch Airlines

The flight from Xiamen to Amsterdam is one of the direct flights from Xiamen to Europe. The boarding was efficient but we had to wait in the plane for 40 minutes due to overload. However, we arrived on time. The flight was 12h20min. The movie selection is not the best... food is good, served twice + a traditional Dutch cookie. The flight attendant ladies are very friendly. The flight from Amsterdam to Zurich arrived on time. The passengers got a tasty roll and different beverages. Overall KLM is still keeping its high standards and excellent service!

The main reason why I only give 2 is the KLM baggage handling.
On our way from Aalborg via Amsterdam to Los Ángeles they "lost" 3 out of 4 bags!
On our way back, same destinations they lost 3 out of 5 bags- despite we had 3 hours in Amsterdam!
On the way out it took 3 days to get 1 bag and 10 days to get the other 2 missing!
On the way back all bags came the next day.
This is totally unacceptable!!!!
The flight itself went accordingly to plan.
The food was nice and service accordingly!
Outbound we flew a 777 - very nice plane with good room between the seats- homebound an old 747 with less distance between seats and, even though upgraded, should have been taken out of service long ago!

An easy flight. Travelers need to be aware of the fact that flights within the UK and Europe do not take checked in baggage for granted. If you wish to check in a suitcase, you need to do it before the flight. It can be done on line and costs 25 Euro. If you leave it to the day of your flight, you pay more at the airport of your departure.

Flight was 3h30 late leaving AMS. Overhead lockers were over full. Meals were inedible. IFE was low IQ. No cabin service (even water) other than meal time. Arrived T1 gate with only 1h15 spare to 2nd airline connection. Met by airport (not KLM) staff who were clueless on how to make rapid connection (bags, check in etc) for T2 flight. Bags took forever. Ran to T2. Got to check in with 30 mins till ETD. Closed. So, 24 hours in nearby airport on KLM. Bus every hour. Room walls full of cracks. Meal vouchers limited to specific inedible food. Can't wait for tonight's flight on an Air NZ 787-9.

So yes, I'm a bit cranky about it as I'll get home 30 hours late. KLM showed no interest in helping the 10 of us (all travelling independently of each other).

Lesson: When doing a double header, make sure the airline reservation system you booked with is clear on how the interface between carriers works, e.g. can you check bags all the way through. I had assumed when I booked on the Air NZ system Air NZ would not offer an onward connection without full integration and there was no health warning on this. I would have made my flight had I not had to clear immigration and customs in PVG, got my bags and checked in again. My fail.

Had the full journey from Canada to South Africa with KLM. Everything was on time and ran well, food was okay as with most airlines but the staff were excellent.
