“Upgraded To Premium Economy... Flying In Style”
Review of Japan Airlines (JAL)

Reviewed July 14, 2019

Was flying to the states from Vietnam via American Airlines and the stretch from Hanoi to Tokyo was operated by Japan airlines. We were supposed to be in the economy class, but got upgraded for free to premium economy and it was literally the best plane ride I've ever been on. Free wine, Free Udon noodles, great in-flight entertainment (with noise-canceling headphones) and ample space. The seats recline super far, with a fold-down foot rest and flip up leg rest. The arm rests are quite wide, so you don't have to jostle with your neighbor for elbow room -- plus there's a partition at head level so you have a good amount of privacy.

Couldn't be happier with the flight. Arigato!!!!

In my many years of travel, never have i experience such great pain in doing a transit/transfer, international/domestic. While making the booking, the JAL system auto book us with a gap of 1.5 hours for a change to domestic plane in Haneda airport. Upon checking in, only did we learn that we have to clear full customs & baggage be taken out & check in again at domestic transfer counter - NO thru baggage into Sapporo. AND baggage will not be accepted at the transfer counter if you are later than 45mins to flight departure, then it has to be carried all the way to the domestic terminal & be checked in there. (Hair stands up in HORROR)
Arriving at Haneda, the passport clearance was miles long, it took full 45mins to clear, then we dash to the baggage area with the heart thumping all the way ...
Found our baggage, run to find the transfer counter ...now its only 35 mins left, we see the staffs kept looking at their watches, trying to decide if they would accept the several poor souls on the que !! More heart thumping.. thank God they accepted the luggage, gave us the train tickets as it is too late to take the bus. We had to run, really run to find the train platform to catch the next train. At the domestic terminal, clearing the security was another mile long, by chance we saw the priority lane, we fought for attention of the staff & showed our boarding time is almost closing - they allowed us to join the priority que.. by the time we ran to the gate, its only 10mins left !!! Our heart was thumping endless !!
WHAT A SUPER BIG PAIN, HOW COULD JAL ALLOWED THIS KIND OF CONNECTION in their TICKETING & ALSO WHY DIDN'T provide sufficient upfront information eg baggage will not be checked thru etc .. to travellers !!!

Same horror story on the way back - when trying to check in on- line, we realized tho it has a JL plane id, it was actually a code share under Jetstar. Means we can't check in on-line. At airport, Jetstar could not print the boarding pass for the 2nd lag on JAL. And Jetstar flight was delayed 35 mins !! Heart starts thumping again as we knew the nightmare with insufficient time to transfer. This round, its Narita - even bigger, more running, searching, right bus to right terminal etc and the running gets real stressful, clearing passport & security ... run, dash, run dash .. we arrive at the gate with the boarding started !!!!!
This is the nightmare that i thank God that i survived through, but do you want to put yourself through it ???
my advise, AVOID THE PAIN, take those airlines that does direct flights into Sapporo & NOT JAL that has to transit / transfers to domestic flights in Tokyo. I don't understand why JAL process flow and design are NOT so traveller friendly
