“Crowded, Bad Food”
Review of China Eastern Airlines

do not expect much from this airline. It is basic. Seats are small and close together. Food is almost tasteless. Water only served with the meal.

    • Cleanliness
    • Food and Beverage
    • Legroom
    • In-flight entertainment (WiFi, TV, movies)
    • Value for money

The food is like vomit. The entertainment choices are very limited. The staff is rude and careless. They allow passengers to smoke onboard. IT IS DISGUSTING.

Basic Airline, No nonsense - dont expect perks and you will love the airline. I am a 6 footer person with a heavy built with a mid budget and im happy with this airline - we flew from Delhi to Vancouver and back - the only problem we faced was from the Shanghai to Delhi sector- very pathetic treatment in terms of departure terminal. It was kind of dingy , bad restrooms, horrible seating , that was the oly black spot in the whole journey.

Hi, the reviews are either amazing or horrible. My wife and I had an amazing flight. Los Angeles to Shanghai to Bali and back in Business class. We had lie flat seats similar to a Delta or United flight. There were enough movies to keep us entertained. The food was good. The flight LAX to Shanghai, the bathroom was huge and the flight attendant cleaned it between each use, even folded the toilet paper in a triangle. The lounge in Shanghai is huge, 2nd floor has amazing massage chairs! On the LAX to Shanghai flight they give you Locitane amenity bags. Our bags did not get lost. I would definitely fly on it the next time I go to China. Enjoy your trip!

This a very, very long story and I can't begin to place all that happened here, but I'll summarize the best I can. I found what I thought to be a great fare going to Hanoi, touring the country and flying back from Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City). A few weeks after booking I get an email that my departure flight from Vancouver to Kunming was cancelled (they had me on WestJet from Edmonton first). They rebooted for either 3 days earlier or a day later. As I was joining a tour group later didn't work. I had already applied for and received my visa for Vietnam. Then after re-booking I enquire about a Chinese visa as I am now over the allowed 24 hour period waiting for my connection to Vietnam. They actually cancelled again before this happened and this was the third leg and I was flying with a friend. We booked separately but on the same flights. After many, many, many calls and emails I think I finally have it all sorted out and upon arrival at the airport in Vancouver they tell us the connecting flight is delayed and we were being re-booked about 8 hours later. When we finally go to board they check docs at the gate and let my friend through but not me. Why, he has a letter which grants him a visa on arrival in Vietnam and I have a visa which doesn't start for 3 days because they booked us 3 days early now. They say sorry, give me one night accommodation, and say I'm on my own for the next two. I say send me home then and I'll come back in 3 days. Nope not a chance. So you can imagine what a happy camper I am by now... The truth is they appeared not to give a you know what about my situation. Had I known I wasn't going to be let on I had plenty of time to go the the Vietnamese embassy in Vancouver and get my visa fixed, but no. So thanks China Eastern. After finally departing the story only gets worse. There was no staff in Kunming to direct us to the hotel due to delays again and there was no place to even sit and the airport as every seat available and most pieces of floor are full of people. They just don't care and I could not find an employee who spoke English to assist me in any way, even when I tried to use Google translate, they just didn't care and it was obvious. My first trip or experience in China was absolutely terrible and I'll never return.
The worst is still to come on my return leg back to Edmonton with delays, stops in China and the feeling of being herded like cattle. In Kunming I decided I'm getting a room and that experience was so bad it's enough to make any new traveller never want to travel again. I am a seasoned traveller and can't imagine a beginner going through this. So at the end of it all and likely what complicated things somewhat is a poor online booking agent who I also will never use again. They repeatedly said thing to my wife who was assisting me from Canada with calls etc when I could not make any calls in China or in the air. Also the fact that I couldn't even use my browser to search for a hotel or information while there due to internet restrictions etc was icing on the cake. That agency was Flightnetwork who I also will never ever use again. They did nothing to prepare me for what I was about to go through and also themselves complained about China Eastern and how difficult they are to deal with.
So, there you have a small Parent of my experience on China Eastern and Flightnetwork. I'm telling the $700 or so I paid for the return ticket was certainly not worth all the aggravation I went through, and I gladly would have paid double to fly on a reputable airline like Cathay and the like.
