I wasn’t expecting to go on this cruise from Amsterdam, northern British Isles, Faro Is, Iceland, Greenland, Shetland Is, Inverness, Amsterdam. But, everything fell into place at the last minute.
Overall, the cruise was good. The sea days allowed me to relax. What stood out on this cruise, though, were the tour guides and the EXC Manager,Glenn Michaels.
One tour guide, whom I have forgotten her name unfortunately, at Reykjavik, Iceland, was really good.
I have a long-standing interest in human consciousness issues and was curious about the local legends concerning the Viking tales related to paranormal events. It just so happened that she knew exactly what I was talking about and offered to share some of the tales her grandparents told her when she was a little girl and the relationship grew from there.
Now, add to this the fact that the captain was focused on providing a completely new experience for all of the passengers while in the Prince Edward Sund, and you have a mostly complete picture of the cruise experience.
What his man did was to take the Rotterdam into a particular scenic section of the Sund, stop the ship, and then slowly turn it around 360 degrees. Doesn’t sound like much, but it would amaze even a novice when you’re there seeing everything around you move smoothly, slowly as this huge ship turns.
Anyway, there were a few surprises to be careful of. It seems someone in Holland America has decided to copy some of what I relate to as the “less moral or ethical” business practices that are becoming common these days.
In the Greenhouse Spa there is a massage service that’s based on a seaweed wrap. The key to making this work for the client is the use of a heated floatation bed. Historically, this bed has always been included in the already high price that was quoted, but not this time. I got into the room and was being prepared with the seaweed rub (so to speak) and the employee said, “Oh, the heated floating bed is an additional $28.” In my book, that’s a form of deception.
Bottom line is that these days, I wouldn’t trust what anyone tells you about the cost or the service in the Greenhouse Spa. Be specific, Insist on details, and don’t take anything for granted.

The ship is showing a little wear but still kept in very nice condition. The population on the cruise was very old--and I'm in that category. The ship does not have very good stabilization and 3 foot seas will put you on motion sickness meds. The entire staff on the ship are
