“Really Long Lines to Check In”
Review of LATAM Airlines

Reviewed 3 weeks ago

The good: LATAM is excellent at unloading and loading passengers. The have the passengers lined up and ready to board as soon as the last passenger is off. Really efficient. The bad: LATAM's check in process is so chaotic that you wonder whether they really want it to be that way. Far too few check-in staff, sometimes only one for a line that stretches way down the airport. Or check-in people sitting behind "CLOSED" signs. Poor or non-existent signage. You just have to get in line and suffer - or stay home. The reward is a short security line because everyone is trapped in the check-in process. It's totally frustrating and invites a Valium.

The check=in process was shambolic with no information available and Latam staff hiding behind counters with little willingness to assist! We allowed 90 mins for check-in (internal flight) but thought we might miss the flight - we didn't as the pilot waited for the other 50 passengers to board who had allowed less time to check in than ourselves. I would try and avoid this airport/airline if possible!

Latam is one of the few companies flying between Brazil and Chile. They try to keep the prices as low as possible, but it affects the overall quality of the service.

The flight was late to arrive at the airport. No information was made available, neither thru monitors nor by the scarce ground staff at the airport. We boarded the airplane and left the gate, just to sit in the tarmac awaiting for clearance. There was no traffic, we were not in line to take-off we were awaiting for paper work, but leaving the gate didn't trigger airport rules for late flights. Apparently this is a common practice by the airline to avoid penalties and reporting late flights.

We experienced a nightmare last night after flight 500 SCL- MIA closed the doors and left us stranded in Santiago even though we have checked in since 6:00 PM. The Paging system for Doors 21 though 23 cannot be heard anywhere else in the terminal but the Gate área making it useless. The glass door was closed nor were we able to access this area, hence we quietly sat in the waiting area of gate 20A located next door but the flight to Miami was never announced until we heard our names in the public paging system which seemed to work at that time and we rushed to gate 21 thinking our Duty Free purchases were ready for pick up, only to find out the flight was already closed and our luggage was retrieved with no chances to board the plane. LATAM staff did nothing to assist and a clerk even suggested we needed to purchase a new ticket until the supervisor realized our duty free bags were left in the airplane by the shops clerk without properly delivering it to us and made the right call to protect us in the morning on a flight vía Punta Cana, this was the night of hell and while waiting for today’s flight we are witnessing the same scenario with passengers heading to Easter Island, it is unheard off that paging system cannot be heard throughout the terminal where a horrible loud music is also playing in the background. This terminal is far from meeting international standards causing troubles to international passengers. Travelers be ware !
