Driving around Arenal Lake

What condition is the road like in August. We want to drive from Monteverde to La Fortuna and head the drive around the lake is beautifiul. We are renting a 4X4 -how long will it take and will we get stuck? Is it worth it? Don't mind a 4 hour drive.

Any advice?

It will take approximately 3.5 hours. The first part of the drive is unpaved and therefore slow going. The road is not in the greatest condition, but certainly passable. As you approach Tilaran, the road will be paved and will be for the duration. The road around the lake is very windy, but there is absolutely beautiful scenery.

Totally agree between 3 to 3.5 hours ride...nice rica...between Santa Elena and Tilaran...some incredible views of Guanacaste...kind of rough...road...just drive slow...

You really do not need a 4x4 ...nice to have one...but more money...just common sense...
