Dentistry in Cuba

Hi

Have been very well treated by Doctors in Cuba. Been very impressed when I had an allergic reaction to mossie bites.

Given we lost our NHS Dentist years ago and Private seems to get more expensive every visit. Have any Cuban regulars been treated in Cuba? I understand the professional standards are high but have not read any reports on this topic.

I needed to have a tooth out whilst in Cuba and contacted the dentist at the International Clinic in Guardalavaca through the doctor I know at one of the resort hotels.

He wanted to charge, for a back tooth, 55 CUC for an extraction. As the pain wasn't bad I waited until I returned home to have the tooth extracted.

I did meet someone though that had some dental work done there at very reasonable prices over a period of time I believe but, dependent on what needed to be done, you may have a problem fitting that all into a two week vacaction.

"... I understand the professional standards are high..."

Even if you go to a clinic that services foreigners I wouldn't call the standards high, but they are acceptable if your procedure is a common one and not complicated.

There are many destinations that offer 1st world medical standards for 3rd world prices. With few exceptions Cuba is not one of them, yet.

Dental prices in Canada (if you don't have a plan) are very costly, this topic is great and I would really appreciate opinions.

This is the only place I'd go to, and even then only to a doctor recommended by Jorge or Pototo.

I am not so sure if would consider having dental work done in Cuba either but I did look at the site. Wow, one implant, total cost $1000. approx. My friend just had an implant done and it cost close to $4500.00 !!!

During my last two visits I have had dental work done by Dr. Miguel at the clinic in guardalavaca. His work is excellent although last November he didn't use novocaine, I'm assuming he was out of it, because the previous year when I had work done he used it, the price, unbeatable for two fillings and one gold crown, 65CUC less than $85.00 Cdn. You can ask resort customer relations , doctor or reception desk make you an appointment. Service is fast, last November, appointment made 9a.m. by the doctor's office receptionist at Luna y Mares, sitting in the chair at 10:15.

Sorry if I sound really thick here, but are you saying that you had two fillings and one crown done for under $85 CDN? I need to also know did you mean that he ran out of pain killer and did not use anything at all? Hey I would rather feel like an idiot, ask and know for sure <grin>.

It is not uncommon to have to supply your own novocaine, or do without.

So how does one supply their own novocaine?

I can see it now. I ask my Canadian dentist for a supply and when he asks what's it for, I tell him it's for a friend? or what. I wasn't aware that you could get novocaine.
