Good visits outside Istanbul?

We will be in Istanbul for 4 days in May for a conference. We would like to spend 3 or 4 days before or after somewhere else in Turkey. Any suggestions?

We might also like to spend 3 or 4 days in Greece. Recommendations appreciated. Is this even feasable?

If you have 3 or 4 days to spare then seriously consider the unique area of Cappadocia, famous for it's'fairy chimnies'.It is only just over an hours flight and these are relatively cheap and very frequent. This beautiful, unspoilt natural area would give you a total contrast to the high rise and bustle of Istanbul.Perhaps a nice wind down after the conference?

Thank you for your quick response. Cappadocia is what I was leaning towards. I read about the Fairy Chimnies as the main attraction. What else is there to see/do?

If you enjoy the outdoors then you can go hiking or horse trekking in the many valleys, visit underground cities, see rock churches, there are some interesting ruins being excavated too which you can visit, wine tasting, traditional pottery centre of Avanos, historical hans(one of which,Saruhan, hosts Whirling Dervish performances each evening),hot air balloon rides, cookery classes,Goreme open air museum and just general mooching, relaxing and enjoying :) Spend a little time reading through some of posts on the Goreme and Cappadocia forum pages.Forum member Heidioftheroad has written some great trips reviews of her trips there, wprth checking out.

May is a good time too.The weather is generally good and mild but cool enough to be pleasant to walk around.

From Istanbul you can fly into either Nevşehir or Kayseri airports. The former is a little closer but the latter often has cheaper flights.
