Dunnottar Castle

We are on a cruise ship which docks in Aberdeen at 2am in July & departs at 2pm.

What would you suggest being the quickest and best way of getting to Dunnottar Castle & then perhaps back to town to do a couple of other walking sightseeing.

Are we pushing our luck to get to Dunnottar Castle??

Another option, Crathes castle is on the route to Balmoral, could you ask to be dropped off at the entrance?

It depends on what kind of castle you like. Crathes is more of a stately home kind of castle with nice gardens and Dunottar is a dramatic clifftop ruin. Crathes is lovely but I would personally pick Dunottar a million times over.

Check the weather the morning you are going to leave. Dunnottar closes if it is windy and it is often windy.

They do put it on their website if they close. Also, think of a return journey as the Castle is about a mile from Stonehaven and there are no taxis or buses at the Castle.

Taxi to Dunnotter is your only option, your ship sails at 2 PM so you would have 4 hours maximum at Dunnotter.

Not on the list above is The Tollbooth Museum, https://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Attraction_Rev…

Taxi journey time about 1/2 hour.

There is a train to Stonehaven and then you could get a taxi. However, as I mentioned before , check if the castle be open due to the wind. Also, if you have any walking difficulties there are 200 steps once you get from the car park and down the road to reach Dunnottar Castle entrance.

Plan B, so many options in Aberdeen itself to see and do.

Yes there is a train but the train will eat into your available time.

Average journey time between Aberdeen and Stonehaven is 17 minutes, 5 minutes to walk to the station from berth, 10-15 minutes Taxi Stonehaven to Dunnotter, trains every 1/2 hour .

Worst case scenario 1 hour plus both ways.

PS. we are not trying to put you off, LOL.
