But why would you change £ Sterling into US£ if you don't have to? The exchange rate is awful at the moment so much better to pay in £sterling if you can.

The uestion is relevant though as occasionally they change the rules and only allow visas to be paid in $. Is that the case now?

Also better to use kenyan shillings in country - unless you have to pay in US£ as you do for safaris.

As Val says, as you are from the UK it makes no sense at all to buy dollars as you get hit twice. Just bring pounds and change for shillings at a forex here or just use your debit card to withdraw shillings as and when you need them. You'll need shillings for local shops, bars, restaurants and tipping.

It has been a long time since Immigration had one of their dollar only days, and they only ever had them at Nairobi, they have always accepted pounds at Mombasa, its currently £30.

You only pay departure tax if you are flying with Thomson and you can pay that in dollars, pounds or shillings. It is $40 so the pound and shilling prices vary with exchange rates it should currently be around £27 or 3,500/-

I agree. Coming from UK, there is no point in getting dollars. If you are using a Debit or Credit Card in Kenya, don't forget to warn your card provider.
