We are coming to kenya for our 3rd time in 2 weeks, bringing lots of pencils, colourong books etc for children, any one suggest where on diani coast (we are staying at Diani sea resort)we can take these too as before we have taken them with us on safari and gave to children in villages we have stopped at.

Also we will need to phone back home, what is the cheapest option to do this is it buy a sim out there and use it in our phone?

1. Re: schools/orphanages?

There ara recommendations / suggestions of schools / orphanages to visit on the South Coast in the FAQ on the right of the forum page.

yes the cheapest way of calling home is to buy a local sim and put it in your phone, as long as your phone is not locked to a UK network.

Airtel to UK landlines is arouind 2.5p per minute.. +44 then the number without the zero.

Orange to UK landlines is less than 2p per minute - To mobiles around 7p per min. Use 88844 (NOT +)

Safaricom charge around 13p a minute to both UK landlines and mobiles

Hi. As Doff says, buy a local Sim card. Turn left at the main road when leaving Diani Sea Resort and walk about 200m, where you will find a shopping centre. You will have to run the gauntlet of Joseph Under the Tree and his minions, but you can have a laugh with them. I ended up giving him a pair of socks for a discount! Hmmmm! Make sure you buy your Sim card from the supermarket, as the smaller shops will try and mark the price up.

We visited Shikamana School, which is about 10 mins by taxi. They have a web site and sponsorship program, and we found it well run with lots of happy children. PM me if you would like more info.

You'll love Diani Sea Resort (we were there in August). Say hello to Swaleh the waiter if he is still there.

The entertainment team in the hotel organise a walk to a local school - you could either go there, or ask around locally.
