Money changing in Medan or BL?

Rate is currently 19500=£1. But when I look buying some rupiahs before I leave the best I can see is 17500. Will I get better than that in Indonesia itself? What would be the best currency to use also - dollars, pounds, euros? I will have loads of aussie dollars too in cash.

Hi Robdylan,

Normally I use the OANDA currency converter as reference.

http://www.oanda.com/currency/converter/

Which shows todays rate as £1= Rp19091

In Indonesia you will much better rates than the 17500,-- you mention.

I have no idea of Medan and Bukit Lawang but our money changer in Tuk Tuk takes normally 3 % which would mean something like £1= Rp18500

Best currency to use in Tuk Tuk in following order: Euro, Australian Dollar, Sterling, US Dollar.

Dirty or somewhat damaged notes may get rejected or only accepted as a lower rate.

HORAS !!!! HORAS !!!! HORAS !!!! WELCOME TO TUK TUK

Perhaps I shall just change a small amount here in England and then hope to get more changed out there using some of my aussie dollars. Are they likely to be open late, perhaps the taxi driver could take me somewhere offering a good rate for aussie dollars if they are still open that late.

money changer are unlikely to be still open until late. most of them close at normal office hour (5pm) unless those inside the airport which wont offer the prettiest of rate anyway

There is some info on ATMs in Bukit Lawang here:

http://www.bukitlawang.com/Info.aspx

I use exclusively ATM card in Indonesia. Moneychangers are a pain.

But shop around for a card with no withdrawal charges before you leave.

The preferred foreign currency in Bukit Lawang is euros. But pounds are ok too, but the rate is bad.
