3 day trip July 27-29 - how to choose?

We are a Norwegian family of 2 adults and 2 children arriving in Reykjavik late July. Arrival a early morning and departure around 6 pm on day 3.

We are looking for some great nature adventures and our kids can do 10-13 km pr day (we hope...). In total we have three days.

I have done some research and am trying to choose among the following:

- Gaysir, Gullfoss etc on the Golden Trail

- Thorsmork

- landmannalaugar

- westfjords

- Skaftafjell incl boat trip etc

We have a car and are happy to do some driving although we would prefer to spend most of our time hiking/viewing!

We would very much appreciate recommendations!

With only one full day plus the day of arrival and the day of departure you really do not have much time to do very much traveling around, so your options are limited if hiking is your main focus. Most of the places you mention are too far away for your short stay.

I assume from your post that you will pick up the car directly from the airport upon early arrival.

One option is to drive directly to some destination when arriving, spend one day hiking and then drive back to the airport early on the third day. With this option you have to skip the Golden Circle.

Another option is to have your base in the Reykjavik area and do day trips of limited length, so you have time to do some hiking.

You could for example then do the Golden Circle on your arrival day and hike somewhere not too far away on the second day.

Some comments about the destinations you mention:

Thorsmørk: To get to Thorsmørk you need a special veichle (not even an ordinary 4WD will do) or you have to take the bus. You could take the bus to Thorsmørk on arrival day (if you arrive early enough), and spend one day there and take the bus back, but I am not sure you would make it back in time for your plane on the third day. There are limited accomodation options in Thorsmørk.

Landmannalaugar: Possible as a day tour (long day) and you can drive yourself if you have a 4WD, but you need some hours driving to and from, so hiking would be limited. Accomodation in Landmannlaugar is also very limited.

Westfjords: Nice area and much recommended, but not possible with your limited time, just too much driving.

Skaftafell: Long drive, not possible as a day tour if you are going to do any much hiking. You could drive to that area on day one if you arrive early and spend two nights there and drive back very early on the third day to catch the plane. The boat trip you mention is on Joulsarlon and is even further east, but you can reach it from Skaftafell in less than one hour driving.

Other day tour and hiking options that you can do as day toursfrom the Reykjavik area:

- Hiking in Hengill/Hveragerdi/Nesjavellir area.

- Glymur in Hvalfjordur, hiking to waterfall.

- There are hiking trails also close to Rekjavik, for example Esja, Helgafell,Reykjanes peninsula

- Snæfellesnes peninsula. Can be done in a long day tour.
