2 Weeks in August

Hi All,

My Partner and I both in late 20s will be travelling to Sicily for 2 weeks in August 12th to 26th. We are looking maybe to stay/base ourselves in Taormina for some or all of the time depending on advise. Currently looking at the hotel Il Piccolo Giardino. This seems to be well reviewed, any other comments or similar hotels would be a great help, I know it is peak season but trying to keep the budget for hotel under 3000eur.

We are looking to have a chilled holiday relaxing at day in the sun maybe some day trips, nice food and wine in the evening. Maybe travel around on motorcycle for a few days just taking things in as we come across them. Would it be best to stay the full 2 weeks in Taormina or move around. We want to relax but equally don't want to miss out on other delights of Sicily. Flying in and out of Catania

Thanks in Advance,

Will.

Hi. With 2 weeks, would be a pity not to spend at least a few days in Siracusa. You could even use Siracusa as a base for excursions in south eastern Sicily, one of the most beautiful areas of the island, gorgeous history, architecture and great beaches.

Welcome to Sicily IrishWill!

August is very hot in Sicily, the peak of peak season, so expects crowds, especially along the coast – Italians holiday in August. 15 August (Ferragosta) is a major national holiday.

But even with the crowds, Taormina and Il Piccolo Giardino could serve you well – Il Piccolo Giardino is a good value hotel in Taormina.

You could certainly relax during the heat of the day, and enjoy a few excursions (also possibly by air-conditioned coach) and dinner with wine at night.

Taormina is a convenient base for exploring and day tripping – In addition to public transport by bus and train, there are many possible group bus excursions.

However, depending on what you would like to see and do, two weeks “may” be too long in Taormina, but that would very much depend on what you don’t want to miss.

And there are certainly many day trip options from Taormina – Castelmola, Savoca, Mount Etna, Catania, Siracusa, Piazza Armerina’s Villa Romana del Casale, the Aeolian Islands, Agrigento’s Valley of the Temples....

You might check California for the vespa.

Without a car, Siracusa would be a possibility, and since Siracusa doesn't have beaches, August isn't peak season in Siracusa, but it is very hot!

Buses run to the beaches south of Siracusa, and if you were to hire a vespa, you could enjoy on your own.

Best wishes!

You could hire a scooter at Hollywood in Siracusa.

Hi Biondo & Vagabonda,

After some surfing through the forums, I think a trip to Aeolian Islands for a couple of days at the start of the holiday could be the best. We are arriving on the 12th of August at 12.20. So maybe hoping to get a bus to the ferry in Milazzo and make a ferry without to much waiting around.

I have read a forum post about Rocce Azzurre, Lipari and that has started me thinking of Lipari.

Really don't know which island would be best. Vagabonda as pointed out Aug 15th is a holiday so may as well stay for that and then travel to Taormina.

Have emailed the hotel Il Piccolo Giardino but they are yet to come back to me I have tried twice maybe they are closed at the moment.

Thanks for the advice about http://www.californiarentcar.com/, I had checked them as I had seen your advise Vagabonda on another thread.

Your posts are a wonderful help and open so many doors for tourists travelling to area. I have travelled to Sorrento and Garda, you also helped me on those trips but which one escapes me.

Thanks so much,

Will.

Hi IrishWill - Thank you for such lovely comments....

It’s wise not to travel on Ferragosta.

The Aeolians are beautiful and a good first stop to enjoy Sicily, but the Aeolians are crowded in August!

Giuntabus runs direct service from Catania’s airport to Milazzo’s port, as well as reasonably priced shuttle services from the airport to the port.

Many accommodations require a full week’s stay during peak season – You might also try the lovely Villa Enrica on Lipari as well.

Much of Taormina has been closed through February, so hopefully you will soon hear from Il Piccolo Giardino.

All the best –

Hi Vagabonda,

I had a look at Vill Enrica and it does look wonderful just maybe a small bit concerened about its distance from the town in the evenings. Also looked into Hotel Mea which seems a new hotel and is well reviewed but not many reviews at the moment.

il Piccoka Giardino have come back to me and as you confirmed there were closed in Feb.

Thanks again for your help,

Will.

Hi Will,

The Villa Enrica enjoys stunning views from a peaceful setting, garden, infinity pool, and friendly owners – There is a free-of-charge shuttle from the port to the hotel on arrival and departure, but you would be walking from town back to the hotel at night. It’s about a 15-minute walk from the port to the hotel.

There are many good options on Lipari, so enjoy!

Best wishes!
