What to do in Punta Arenas and Torres Del Paine in July

We are traveling to Patagonia in July and trying to decide how best to plan the trip. Our friends will be joining us from Santiago - they are more familiar, but not sure how best to plan ahead. Weather may restrict us from traveling, so booking in advance is not always smart. It seems most of the B&Bs are booking up. Any suggestions?

Your main problem would be lodging in the park if you were planning on using the refugios. However, some of the more expensive properties like Hostería Las Torres offer considerable discounts and remain open.

Where were you looking at B&Bs, Punta Arenas? In winter you would fly to Punta Arenas and then bus to Puerto Natales. Another bus takes you to Torres del Paine park. It depends how many days you would be spending in the area, but day trips are certainly possible from Puerto Natales, though a lot of time gets eaten up travelling to and fro. Remember that the days are much shorter at that time of year.

As Dancing Molly says, refugios will be shut so you'll need to rely on the hotels either in/around the park or in Puerto Natales. Again, time spent travelling should be a major consideration and shorter days is also a material consideration.

However, winter can be just stunning down there, the rainfall is usually low and winds at their calmest. It's the time of year you can go kayaking around the glaciers. Stunning stuff.

I think you can and should plan & book ahead as weather shouldn't be a deal breaker - take a look at the climate charts and you'll see some surprising patterns.

Thank you so much for the replies!

We are planning to stay in Punta Arenas and Puerto Natales at B&Bs. We fly into Punta Arenas around lunchtime and want to head straight to Puerto Natales to find lodging (although we could stay the first night in Punta Arenas if weather is restricting). Then travel by bus to Torres del Paine and El Calafate. We want to spend a little time in Punta Arenas before flying back to Santiago.

Is renting a car worth it?

I'm still having trouble convincing our friends to book in advance...

It sounds like weather doesn't often interfere with travel from Punta Arenas to Puerto Natales... What about flights into Punta Arenas?
