Markets around Cayo Santa Claira

Is there a local market in this area? Would it be worth spending some time at?

We've been to Mexico a few times and have enjoyed going into town and shopping at the craft/art/local markets. We are looking at Cuba this year. I understand that Cayo Santa Claira is an island and somewhat removed from the tourist setting of more developed locations, but we would still like to get off the resort for parts of a couple days. Just looking for a few excursions. Any suggestions?

Trinidad de Cuba is a lovely day trip offered out of Cayo Santa Maria . Nice scenery and scenic drive to a Unesco heritage city that offers a peek at colonial Cuban architecture . Has a lively market too. It is a long day but in my opinion, worth it.

There is a list of trips.

The pueblos are man made for the tourist.

They are worth a wonder on a bad day.

Just my opinion but the crafts markets in Cuba do not offer nearly the diversity as those in Mexico. Part of this is the lack of natural resources such as silver, gemstones, etc. that are easily available in Mexico. We just brought back an onyx mask and a very nice silver bracelet from our trip to DF. What Cubans do excel at is making interesting items from recycled materials and wood carvings. It is amazing how the two cultures are so different.

Agree with diva that the Pueblos make a good way to pass some time when the weather is not so good. Keep in mind that the crafts people used to change every day so what you see one day will be different from the next.

We stopped in both markets. They are very small and the amount of merchandise is limited. However, there is even less at the airport, so we found a few small things to bring back. Good luck with your shopping!
