Hi Caroline, I can recommend this area wholeheartedly. Tropea is a fantastic old town full of character and the beaches at Pizzo and Zambrone are gorgeous with white sandy beaches to rival the Caribbean! If you have a look at InCalabria's website you'll find lots of useful links and more info about the area. (although it's primarily a property website there are some good general articles/links to travel etc)

Hope you enjoy it!

Look the photos under www.turiscalabria.it

The Costa Viola is unbelievable, the sea is so clean that the red coral is reproducting... It is closer to Reggio Calabria which has one the most beautiful promenade in Italy and the archeological museum with the Riace Statues. From the village of Favazzina starts a 2 hours walking track leading uphill to the villageof Tagli alternating live rocks, galleries of orchards and oaks or stunning views. For guided tours ring Ecotouring Costa Viola 0965-794323. If you can afford 5 stars hotel look at

You’re considering a very lovely area Caroline W and Anna and her website are excellent resources!

The Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Reggio Calabria is closed during restorations. Only the museum offices are open. There’s no anticipated date for the reopening.

The Bronzi di Riace are currently housed at the Palazzo Campanella. You can view the Bronzi di Riace from 9.00-19.30 free of charge.
