Doubtful Sound

Which cruise ship is the best to take for a day trip on Doubtful Sound? We'd like a small boat with not many people and good viewing possibilities. The foto of the Doubtful Sound Cruise ship gave me the impression that everyone has to be inside the boat viewing was only through windows. Does it have to be that way even in summer months?

Hi janeverm,

I'm also researching for my trip to the South Island. So far I've only found two that cater to small groups:

1) Real Journeys Small Boat Cruise - Max. 20 passengers:

www.realjourneys.co.nz/Main/SmallBoatCruises/

2) Doubtful Sound Cruise - Max. 50 passengers:

http://www.doubtfulsoundcruise.com/

The first options does not include a tour of the Manapouri Power Station which may be of interest to some.

Hope this helps. Happy planning!

Hi,

We have booked Deep Cove Charters for next year which holds a max of 12 people but it is an overnight cruise.

Doubtful Sound Cruise has a maximum of 20 passengers (as stated in the link in post #1 above). It is a one man operation - the Manapouri boat driver becomes the bus driver becomes the Doubtful Sound boat skipper.

We did the cruise with http://www.doubtfulsoundcruise.com/ last month and it was perfectly fine, in fact our tour spent longer out than the Real Journeys group. The boats are smaller (you take 1 across Lake Manapouri, transfer to a coach after some time in the Visitor Centre then do a tour of the power station before driving over the Wilmot Pass to board another boat for the Doubtful Sound cruise) and we had only about 20 people. Both boats have outside access - you will need to rug up warmly !

With a winter special ours was considerably cheaper too.
