Convenience Stores or Supermarkets on the Coral Coast?

Hi, we are going to be staying at the Shangri La, and I was wondering if there are any convenience stores or supermarkets in that area—a place to get a few basic food items like bread, some fruit, bottled water etc? If there are, how far away are they—walking distance, biking distance, taxi ride— and what are the prices like?

Hi Sarah, welcome to the forum. I'm sure others that have stayed there can tell you if there is anything within walking distance (there probably is, Fiji is dotted with little stores that don't always look like stores from the outside and there are plenty of people selling bits and pieces like fruit roadside - don't forget the wash/peel rule, don't want anyone getting an upset tum). Your other option is to go into Sigatoka which is about 10 minutes away by Taxi, or you could look at catching the local bus in and getting a taxi back for a different experience. You'll find a reasonably large supermarket there where you'll be able to stock up on drinks, snacks, bread etc. You can also take quite a wide variety of food/snacks from home if that would work better for you... no raw nuts, meat (canned fish is fine), fruit or honey. Declare anything you take and remember that even items such as Vegemite are considered a 'paste' so are not allowed in carry on luggage.

Price wise the basic rule of thumb is - local stuff is cheap, imported stuff most definitely is not. Breakfast cereal, chocolates, beverages and toiletry items are all examples of things that fall into the latter group. And, in case you were wondering, nearly all the milk available for sale in Fiji is UHT - safer and easier to transport that way.
