living in deshaies

Can anyone tell us what's its like living in desharies? We are considering deshaies or st Marie as a second home but we are yet to visit the island's to check them out.

Looks lovely on the internet but if anyone has experience either from holidaying or living there we would appreciate your insight . Is there much English spoken there?

Thanks for your help

Getting along without deep French knowledge is quite doable, but it helps to try (phrasebook) to use a little bit - softens the stand of the locals. But for buying a 2nd home of course lots of paperwork in French is needed, in such a case have a good local lawyer next to the estate agent and both must be fluent enough in English to translate the nitty gritty details to you.

On your other question: no package holidays to the region by UK operators (but lots of them by French and Quebecois ones). Best connection from UK is first budget flight to Paris-Orly and from there direct Air France to PTP.

All the best,

Deshaies is a really nice area close to the seaside. If you are looking for rest and relaxation, then I recommend Deshaies. The 'town' has a catholic Church, one supermarket, a post office/bank only Eruos, several tourist shops and that's about it. It is about an hour and a half driving from Pointe-a-Pitre (commercial capital) to the North and about a three hour drive to Bassterre to the south (the political capital). I too am thinking of getting a little one bedroom home there bu I'm just thinking for the moment.
