Taipa or coloane

We will only have one day in Macau and will be staying in Kowloon. We plan to walk around St Pauls and Senado square areas and then go to Taipa or Coloane village.

Which would be best for us to see, Taipa or Coloane village ?

We have no interest in casinos so proximity to Venetian etc no advantage.

I imagine a taxi would be best transport to one of the villages and maybe grab a casino shuttle on way back to ferry.

You could probably see both. First Taipa village, then Coloane Village. Both are nice places to walk around with interesting architecture and good restaurants.

In Taipa- most notable:- Taipa Houses Museum. These are a row of houses previously built by high society of Macanese and now converted to museums by the government. Nearby is Our Lady of Carmel Church. Set against a tranquil setting fronting a lake.

Then of course the food street of Rua do Cunha-plenty of good restaurants and bakeries. Also a restaurant here selling famed crab porridge(Seng Cheong) and Mok Yi Kei for their durian ice cream.

In Coloane- A Ma Cultural village, St Francis Xavier church and the lovely country side of Macau, and also black sand beach(Hac Sa).

A place famed for Lord Stow's Portuguese egg tart, found in Coloane village, and of course, Fernando's restaurant la,for sangria and Portugese food- a nice place to drink a bottle of vinho verde complemented with Portuguese sausage;then you tucked into clams with a special sauce and dipped the bread into this gravy.

Well, if you are in Macau Peninsula, even a bus can take you to either one of these village. If one is planning to do both in one day,I suggest going to Coloane first- a nice warm egg tart with tea, walk along the beachfront, until lunch at Fernando's ,then back to Taipa, then walk to Venetian to take the shuttle bus back to ferry terminal or to Sands.

G'day Magnet1.

Taipa village is larger, and has more variety than Coloane, but sections of it (particularly Rua de Cunha and Rua de Regedor) have become too commercialized for my taste, although you can get some excellent food in either street.

In whichever village you choose to visit, and downtown, I'd strongly recommend wandering around back streets / alleys as well as the main tourist streets - that's where you'll find a lot of really interesting vignettes of local life - and it's very safe.

While downtown I'd also suggest that you walk up the small hill behind the Senado building (opposite the square) to St Augustine's Square - also some beautiful historic architecture but without the milling throngs of people.

From the main road running pastg Senado Square, you can catch bus 11 or 33 to Taipa, and bus 28A runs from Taipa to the main ferry pier.
