Fly or fast boat....

We are flying into bali at 2100 in may and wanted to head to gili trawangan the next day. Ive read so many reviews on here that im now toatlly confused and not sure of the best options.

Should we pre organise a fast boat to take us over in the morning or should we fly to lombok and go from there. If we fly whats the best way to get to the island and then onto the hotel? Im thinking of fying out when we come home so we can travel out later in the day as to spend all the time we can there.

Aslo whats the weather likely to be in may in regards to crossing in a fast boat?

Any help will be appreciated :)

Hi Eccy,

There are some pros and cons in flying or taking fast boat to trawangan. Let me try to break it down for you :-D

** taking fast boat

You'll need to spend around 1,5-2 hours on the road to get to Padang Bai Harbour, and then spend another approximately 75minutes on the fast boat to get directly to Gili Trawangan. Most fast boat companies include pick up service from ur accommodation in Bali to Padang Bai Harbour. The weather in May tends to be okay. Wave tends to be smooth as well. i recommend companies like Gili Cat or Marina Srikandi. Marina has been getting bad reviews before, but i has improved a lot btw.

** taking the flight

You can take Lion Air or Garuda Indonesia. it'll be a 20-25 minutes flight. The bummer is that Lombok International aiport is 1,5 - 2 hours away from the harbor to cross over to Trawangan. Once u get to the harbor, you can choose the speed boat (cost around IDR100K - 200K/ person one way) which will take you to Trawangan in 15 minutes, or the public boat (cost IDR 13K/person/oneway) which can take u to trawangan in 30-45 minutes.

If your main destination is Gili Trawangan, it's cheaper and save u lots of time taking the fast boat :-)

Well, if you are going to spend a few days in Lombok, then, i suggest you take the flight, and spend a couple days on the mainland and head to Trawangan afterwards. The mainland of Lombok offers culinary experiences (make sure u dont go to touristy places where only westerners go ^^), easier access to virgin white sandy beaches and little islands like Gili Nanggu, Gili KEdis, Gili Kere, Gili Kondo, etc. those gilis have different characteristic from trawangan which is known as the most super touristy little island in Lombok ;-)

Hope that's useful ^^

75 minutes Padang bai to Gili T is only in calm weather, it can extend significantly when the sea is not calm.

To save a second day of travel check out the early evening flights to Lombok with Garuda. Depending on your arrival time you may be able to hop straight over to Lombok, stay on Lombok for the night and head over to Gili T for brunch
