All fast ferries between gilis and bali cancelled until 2/27

For anyone planning to go to the Gilis from Bali or vice versa, fast ferries have been cancelled for 5 days by order of the harbor master in Bali due to the current. Make alternative arrangements!

Hi Rehana,

Can you still travel by speedboat to and from Lombok? We are gling to GiliT in 3 weeks, but are flying in & out of Lombok. We are hoping that it will be OK, especially travelling back from GiliT to Lombok a few days later, as we have a flight from Lombok to Denpasar & then have to get an international flight back to Sydney that night.

Look forward to hearing from you,

Cheers,

Sandy

The sea has been a bit excitable in the last few days.

It must be quite dynamic out in the middle of the Lombok Strait.

3 weeks is a long way out so don't be too worried.

Also the water between the Gili islands andTeluk Nare or Bangsal are reasonably protected.

I can confirm there are no fast boats. We had guests arrive tonight on the Garuda flight who were booked on a fast boat.

It was fine between gili t and Lombok. We did that (15 minutes in a fast boat) to a taxi (2 hrs/200,000 rupiah) to the airport and caught a plane. No problems at all with that.

LionAir still seem to have seats on plenty of flights so presumably the others do as well.

Here is a list of the airlines operating services to Lombok (LOP) from Bali (DPS):

✯ Merpati Airlines http://www.merpati.co.id/

✯ Sky Aviation http://www.sky-aviation.co.id/

✯ TransNusa http://www.transnusa.co.id/ [no online bookings]

Crossing to the Gili from Bangsal or even Senggigi is a short trip in protected waters. Crossing from Bali is a long trip in open seas over one of the deepest channels of water on earth. Chalk and cheese.

Very occasionally the small boats running between Lombok and the Gili don't run because of very nasty weather, but it is usually local storms or extremely windy conditions that cause that, and the services resume quickly.

I recall that chalk is will not float as chalk has a density of 2499 kg/cu.m, water's density is 1000 kg/cu.m. Cheese will also likely sink, especially if it has holes in it as does an Emmentaler cheese :)

So you are at the mercy of the weather and your appetite.

Only the very adventurous would cross the Lombok strait at this time. Chances are the outcomes would be comparable to those of both chalk, and cheese when placed into the water.

The crossing across from the mainland to the 3 Gili islands is less problematic, and as outlined by Sudiah, it is like chalk and cheese, but more in the context of a tasty snack. A chalk sandwich is certainly going to be disappointing. A Fastboat crossing at this time would likely be even more disappointing than a chalk and salad sandwich.

A ferry could still feature as a bit of a carnival ride, and you will likely get wet, either boarding, disembarking, or on route.

So bag your valuables in a double wrap of palastic, preferrably a zip-lock bag for things like passport, tickets or other important papers. Common sense and careful handling is essential for things like phones and cameras, bag them with some enthusiasm!

A nice Emmentaler cheese sandwich would be far nicer than anything using chalk, even more so if it were not wet and soggy from a comprehensive dunking in seawater.

Sudiah is quite correct, comparing the short crossing in protected waters from the Lombok mainland across to a Gili island to an open seas crossing in a small fragile high speed boat is like comparing "chalk and cheese".

Tossed salad may also be on the agenda if the sea is a bit excitable.

My recommendation is find a nice protected bay on Lombok and skip water crossings and being stuck on a small island with not much to do in bad weather.

Frankly at the moment that would also be my chosen action. It is perfectly nice on the mainland.

I can hear the sea churning around as I write this.

It is quite 'active'.

If the sea conditions continue as they are then is is likely the vehicular ferries http://www.indonesiaferry.co.id/ running between Padang Bai and Lembar will probably be suspended for a while, if they have not already stopped.
