Guest house in January 2014 in Pak Beng

Hi

We plan to travel on the slow boat from Huay Xai to Luang Prabang. Does anyone know if we can just turn up and find a clean budget room in Pak Beng, in the height of the season, on 27th January please or should we pre book? Many thanks.

Book the Nagi slow boat with adisak and they will prebook you a room and you won't be in a crowded boat.

Yes you can - there are a dozen cheap guesthouses near the wharf and between them they have many more beds than the daily boat has passengers. You can see the range of accommodation here:

bluecramp - many thanks for your reply, just what we wanted to know. Great map too!

Are we right in thinking the slow boat is more comfortable now with softer seats or do we need to buy a cushion to sit on?

LizWHobart - thank you for your reply but we did not plan to pay Adisaks prices as we are away for quite a long time. Many thanks

The slow boat can get crowded and even if you get a seat it can be a hard plastic one - bring a thai square cushion, they're only a few dollars anyway,

Hi - I did the slow boat trip in June this year - only one boat left Huay Xai that day - on arrival at Pakbeng you will be greeted by a multitude of young people carrying pics of available rooms - its a great occasion for them when the boats arrive as not much happens in Pakbeng. I stayed at Monsavanh Guesthouse which was fine - its reviewed on Trip Advisor. Opposite are a few restaurants which overlook the river. You can buy a fresh made baguette in the early morning before getting back onto the boat. You can buy drinks and snacks on the boats also. Be aware of the man who walks up the main street in Pakbeng offering to sell marijuana.
