General info about Bayahibe the town?

Hi fellow travel addicts!

I've been posting a lot the past few days, trying to narrow down a DR destination for my spouse and myself. I think I may have decided on Bayahibe. We are scuba divers, and I've found through this website and Scuba Board that Bayahibe has the best scuba diving. I've been searching for some general information on what the town of Bayahibe is like, but am not coming up with much.

In addition to scuba diving, we also enjoy laying on the beach, trying different restaurants, and spending a few hours at a quieter bar chatting with random people. :) We are not big party-people, so nightclubs are not high on our list. Also we are not big shoppers, except for the requisite cheesy souveniers for family members.

So far, the only thing I know about Bayahibe is:

--Small fishing town

--Lots of scuba operators

--A few all-inclusive resorts

--Two beaches: one public, one private

We rent apartments by the week when we travel (as opposed to staying at an all-inclusive or a hotel), so we will need to go into town for restaurants and bars, etc., rather than relying on restaurants/bars at the resort.

My questions are:

--How many and what type of restaurants are available in Bayahibe?

--Bars/pubs? How late are they open at night?

--Grocery store? Liquor store?

--What kind of shopping is available?

--How is the public beach?

--Is there a place we could rent a moped/scooter/bicycle to possibly take a day trip to the National Park Este? (We are both mopedders at home here in Minneapolis, and have lots of experience driving mopeds.)

Muchas gracias, amigos!!! Thanks so much in advance for your help with my silly questions!

I think Bayahibe is exactly fitting to what you are looking for.

We have two public beaches in Bayahibe, one in Dominicus - about 5 minute ride from Bayahibe village.

Let's see the resturants:

El Cafecito de la Cubana, Commodoro, La Jungla, Mama Mia, Perlita Morena, Issamar, Carambar, Saona Cafe, Chicky Blue, Bambu, Mare Nuestro, Dona Clara, Kapitan Kidd, Barco Bar, Lost Bar, just to name a few ... many of them serve pizza and pasta, but also great steaks, seafood, great lobsters, local dishes, Cuban dishes, Beside all these restaurants, there are many corner eateries with local food.

Most of the bars/ restaurants close at 11, some close on the weekends at 2 AM, or until the guests leave.

Grocery stores - the biggest one La Defensa, Colmadon, many small corner stores.

Liquer stores - non existent, you can buy alcohol in any store

You can buy basic groceries, beach supplies, basic household items, clothes. If you want to go for more shopping La Romana city is only a 15 minute car ride away.

Public beaches - nice, clean, during weekends usually very busy

You can rent a moped / small motorbike in Dominicus.

If you want more info you can email me at denise@discoverbayahibe.com, also check my Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/discoverbayahibe with daily weather updates and photos from the area, with info about shopping as well. You can see the bay in Bayahibe live at www.bayahibewebcam.com

Hope this helps a bit

Thank you soooooo much for this excellent information! This is why I love Trip Advisor.

How far away is Dominicus from Bayahibe? Is it a whole separate town? Is it walkable?

You can walk, it takes about 50 minutes, or 5 minute ride. Look at my Facebook album to see how the pathway looks like, it's a nice nature walk, mostly in the shade, but take lots of water / drinks with you, it gets hot.

Interesting! Neat pics. Looks like a fun hike.

So I am looking for an apartment/kitchenette to rent for the week...I have found Villa Iguana and that's all...are there any others? We don't want to stay at an all-inclusive resort, and would prefer to stay in Bayahibe as opposed to Dominicus.

To me, it looks like Dominicus is just a few all-inclusive resorts and that's all, correct? Not an actual village like Bayahibe?

In Bayahibe village:

http://www.hotelbayahibe.net/

http://www.villabayahotel.com/

http://www.villaiguana.de/

Note: Hotel Bayahibe - double room price is per room and not per person as stated on their website. No cooking facilities though. Prices include breakfast.

There are also some Cabañas eg. Cabañas Trip Town (no website) These are really basic accommodations with fan or airco, fridge but no cooking facilities. Price 800 to 1000 rd per night.

Dominicus has no real village and everything is inland. There is a pedestrian street filled with gift shops, tour companies and a few boutiques. A residential area (mostly expats), a few small hotels, a few restaurants, a bakery, a supermarket.... and a public beach area between the resorts.

Dominicus is a residential area, mostly the "gringos" like us live there. There are resorts but only one, Viva is in the village, the rest is further down the beach.

Our clients just stayed at Cabana Elke in Dominicus and loved it, but spent most of the time in Bayahibe village, more things to see and do they said.

There is more to rent in Bayahibe, see here:

Have either of you heard about Le Terrazze Residence?

Thoughts?

Otherwise, what are your thoughts on the apartments at Cadaques Caribe?

I looooooove Cadaques, beautiful private beach, never too busy.

La Terraze residence is at the entrance of the Bayahibe village, above the vet, we used to live in the complex next door. 5 minute walk to the village and the beach. If you want to stay away from the village noise then that is a good choice, but by the main road to Bayahibe, so you might hear the traffic.

How long does it take to walk to the beach from Villa Iguana?

Also, I read one report that the owners are trying to sell...is this true?
