transport ideas from Tuscania

Hi,

I am one of a group of 5 ranging from 40 to a very young 70 years, who have just rented a house in Tuscania for 6 weeks. We do plan to have overnight trips to places further away during this time.

Should we rent a car for the whole time? Are scooters ? even pushbikes for local areas an option?

So my question is how difficult is it to get to main train or bus routes from Tuscania so we can explore the region fully?

Any suggestions on transport options greatly appreciated?

Tuscania is a wonderful place to base from if you like Etruscan history. There are two very nice churches outside the main town that are worth a look. A car would give you the best options for exploring the area. It is of course in Lazio not Tuscany.

You can look at the website for Trenitalia for stations in the region, Tarquinia and Viterbo have stations and Orvieto in Umbria is an easy day out. Stations would be below the hill towns and additional transportation would be needed to get to the town itself.

Buses would be another option but often the schedules are not convenient for staying later in the towns.

What kind of activities are you looking for? The area is rich in Etruscan sites, the painted frescoes in the tombs in Tarquinia are amazing. The museum there is interesting and there is another one in Viterbo. The massive tomb site in Cerveteri was fascinating to me.

The sea is an easy drive as is the Maremma area of Tuscany. There are several interesting towns circling Lake Bracciano including Bracciano itself with its medieval castle. Closer is Lake Bolsena and the town of Bolsena which you could reach on your way to Orvieto.

A car would really be the best way to see the area. What time of year are you visiting?

PS In Tuscania, across the parking lot from the Tower of Lavello are two very good places to eat. On the lower level is the trattoria run by Mama and on the upper level, the son runs an excellent restaurant with traditional fare.

Thanks for the info and it all sounds wonderful.

Sounds like a car for the whole time is the best option.

Will be arriving at the end of aprl for 6 possibly 8 weeks so will have plenty of time to have a good look around and without having having to rush.

Will defiantly try both the trattoria and restaurant you mentioned.

The best public transportation to Tuscania is the COTRAL bus from Viterbo. Coming FROM Viterbo, you can board the bus at the very convenient stop along Viale Trento, very close to the Porta Fiorentina train station. There is a large newsstand kiosk near the bus stop which sells tickets.

The bus fare is 2 Euros in each direction, and the ride takes 30 minutes.

You can also reach Tuscania by COTRAL bus from Tarquinia (Barriera San Giusto-city walls) and Valentano, among other places. In Valentano, you can connect to the RAMA bus to/from Pitigliano.

The bus stop in Tuscania is right outside the town walls, a two-minute walk to the main entrance gate.

Having a car is extremely worthwhile and practical to visit the many small towns and hamlets in this part of northern Lazio which is not terribly well serviced by public transportation. Nevertheless, you can rely on the COTRAL bus for the limited purpose of visiting Tuscania.

Note that the bus service is extremely limited on Sundays.

P.S.: Tuscania is a GEM!
