Hi. Thinking of visiting for first time early August!
Is the weather Ok then. Will it be sunny and rain or just constant rain no Tan situation?
It very rarely rains all day here. It may depend on when in August you’re coming as it can be the transition period into the rainy season but September and October are usually the wetter months. But early August we’re often desperately praying for rain just to alleviate the sticky conditions, reduce the humidity and clear the dust in the air.
If this is your first time here in SE Asia you’ll need to watch your exposure to the sun. Being nearer the equator the sun is much stronger and you burn in 20 minutes. There’s a greater risk of skin cancer too and you’ll see the locals using umbrellas to keep the sun off them. So a portable umbrella has a twofold use 😎🌂☔️
Thanks for reply. It will be the first two weeks? Would this be better? Does it rain in the day then sun comes out or is it overcast all the time. Which area would you say is best for our first time?
Penang is an island with a hilly interior, so it rains when winds blow rain clouds towards the island. What that means is it doesn’t necessarily rain everywhere so it can be dry down the south end but wet at the north. Or vice versa. Sometimes we get tremendous thunderstorms at night, with torrential rain. At other times it rains during the day. So it’s not possible to give you an exact answer. What I would say is that after a while you appreciate overcast days.
Where you stay will depend to some extent on what you want from your holiday. There are plenty of suggestions over on the right under the Top Questions. If you want to stay in a lovely heritage property, be able to wander out to eat almost 24 hours of the day, be near all the sights of the island, lots of shopping, plenty of nightlife then stay in George Town. If you want a sterile modern hotel, nothing open during the day, no shopping malls, some distance from most of the island’s sights BUT with a beach go to Batu Ferringhi.
This is a good website to use https:/…holidays-2019.html
You will see that next year the August school holidays are from the 10th to 18th August.
Yes, attractions will be busier here, and if a lot of KL families decide to come up for the week it swells the traffic on the roads and there are more traffic jams and delays between Tanjung Bungah and Batu Ferringhi.
Thanks. Pss. Seems July - Aug is peak time.. the hotels (rsr) are more expensive than say September based on sample dates...
