Volunteering in Palestine

Hey guys... my friend wants to volunteer in Palestine for a month or two very soon but she is at a loss as to how to organise it.

Can anyone shed some advice? What organisations should she go through etc..

This site has never let me down... hope it doesnt start now!

Here are some sites that may be helpful to getting started. They are ones I’ve saved as I’ve been looking into volunteer opportunities, but I have not volunteered with any of them. So they are not recommendations, but since no one has come forward with anything yet, these sights may just help to get things going.

I have had some interaction with Alternative Tourism Group, Operation Dove, and the Palestinian Solidarity Project as a tourist and they seem reputable. Some of the links are for tourism or study, but have additional links on their page for volunteer opportunities.

Hope this helps a wee bit. Please follow up with whatever works for her.

Hi. Has anyone participated in the Palestine Summer Encounter before? I'm considering joining the group, but not sure if it is a reliable one. Thanks!

I participated in the Palestine Summer Encounter last year – it was the experience of a lifetime and as it has been going for a several years operates like a well-oiled machine from the moment you arrive. They always have a participant’s coordinator who has been on the programme in previous years. My volunteer assignment (Palestine Medical Relief) will stay in my memory for ever. You can stay for one, two or three months. I would recommend two, in that you would experience the complete programme, those who stay for three months essentially were able to spend more time on their volunteer assignment and learn more Arabic. Most of the participants were US/Canadian/UK college students with a sprinkling from other parts of the world. Most were in their 20s or early 30s but there were a few older people like myself.

If you have any questions please post.

Thackeray, were there any Jewish participants in the Palestine Summer Encounter? Just wondering if it is safe for a (non-Israeli) Jew who might wish to volunteer and if they are made to feel welcome.
