self catering in the canadian rockies

Currently planning a 3 week trip in w.canada next summer. Have visited b4 but did it in rv. Thought thus time we would go for a week in self catering in rockies but finding that a) there isn't much and b) expensive. Does reasonably priced self catering exist?

Welcome to the TripAdvisor forums, Steph! Remember, you'll be paying high season rates whether you're self catering or not, and in the Rockies, that sometimes doesn't seem reasonable.

This TripAdvisor Traveller Article on Hotel Districts and Amenities in Banff includes a list of hotels and other accommodations that have kitchen facilities:

Canmore may have something closer to what you're looking for. Located just 15 minutes east of the Banff townsite, and outside of the park, they have a number of condo-style hotels which have cooking facilities. I understand they are less expensive, but on the other hand, you will spend an extra 30 minutes of driving each day compared to staying in the Banff townsite.

Self-catering accommodation is not all that plentiful in the national park towns (Banff, Jasper, Lake Louise and Field) due to the parks' development restrictions (limited land is available for building on) and the residency restrictions for housing. So you won't find "vacation rentals", that is an entire house or a condo available for nightly rent. You will find units *within* residents' homes.

For Banff, check B&B listings on www.banfflakelouise.com . A few of them offer a full suite. There are also hotels that offer condo-style units.

In Jasper, there are some hotels and cabins with kitchen facilities, but the majority of self-catering (and much more budget-friendly) accommodation is "PHA", or private home accommodation - rooms or a suite within a resident's home. Some of them have a full kitchen, quite a number have a kitchenette, which is usually a fridge or mini-fridge, microwave, kettle, toaster, coffee-maker etc. These are listed at www.stayinjasper.com, which has a search feature which will help narrow down the options. Nightly rates would fall between about $100 and $175, depending on how many in your group, whether there is a full kitchen etc. Another advantage of PHA over hotels is that they don't charge the 11% taxes.

Field, BC, in Yoho National Park, just over the provincial border from Banff National Park and not too far from Lake Louise, has a number of guesthouses, some of them with self-catering accommodations. www.field.ca However, the town itself is VERY small (200 - 300 residents), with only one small general store, so you would probably want to plan to stock up on groceries elsewhere (Banff or Golden).

There are also a number of hostels, including the wilderness ones along the Icefields Parkway, that have shared cooking facilities. Check the HI (Hosteling International) website for more information on these.

In addition, please check out cabin/chalets style accommodation in Banff and Lake Louise at the official Banff Lake Louise Tourism website. www.banfflakelouise.com

I do suggest not to wait to long with booking, as these kitchen units are very popular during the summer months.
